Guillows P-38 Lightning

Dear Dean. When you're alone on Christmas (I lie; my two cats are keeping me company), it provides the ideal opportunity to read sections of SOS which I do not normally have time for. Thus, I perused @Daniel20 Daniel's and @RDN1954 Johan's build logs on the Wright Flyer and Kolibri respectively before I focused on the Lightning. Now, everyone on SOS should know by this time that you are one of the most gifted modelers on the forum and your P38 is proving to be yet another case in point. However, to me, this build is overshadowed by the reference and connection to your mother. Your vision of remembrance courtesy of the P38 makes it such a special tribute to her that it simply puts this project in another realm. It is a celebration of life which makes it altogether special. And in the words of @dockattner Paul - keep your family close.

Thank you very much Heinrich! Unfortunately I have been sidetracked. I ordered more wood, and while waiting, shifted my attention to the NL.
But in due time I will resume this build and finish it.
Have a Merry Christmas!

Well, I got tired of making tiny wooden windows on the Norske Love. And I’m not quite ready to get back to planking the P-38 yet. So…Quick side project!
It should only take a week for me to finish this 1/72 scale SBD-3 Dauntless. I bought it a few years back to add to my WW2 aircraft collection.
It was famous for its success in the battle of Midway as a bomber. My current progress after a few days…

I still have to add the air brakes, and then decals and some final weathering. The interior is very detailed for a 1/72 scale model. Very happy with it so far.

Always nice to see the ‘intermediate build’ of a waiting model to finish. It deserves this nice treatment, Dean. Nice looking details.
Regards, Peter

Hi Dean, great glue up and paint job! Looks like a fun fill in, makes me want to visit Hobby Lobby now.
Thanks Daniel! I have a big collection of WW2 airplanes and they are all in 1/72 scale. That way I have room for them! ROTF.
I am thinking about building a B-17 and putting it on a shelve with my P-51 mustangs. I fitting display of bomber with escorts. You should build a P-51 to go with your B-17 in the same scale. ;)

My current WW1 and WW2 airplanes…
IMG_6623.jpegIMG_6621.jpeg

They are all 1/72 scale except the Camel, which is 1/16 scale. And I still have the Nieuport and Albatross in 1/16 scale to build!
I currently have 16 WW2 aircraft and I need a few more to have a full representation of the aircraft from around the world. Still need a few Japanese aircraft…probably start adding bombers, but they are very large, so thus far it’s just been fighter aircraft.

You know Dean that is an excellent suggestion, it would make for a great fill-in. I am having to come up with more display space, not an easy task.

Finished! Put on air brakes, decals and then clear coated decals with a matte finish polyurethane.

Excuse the pics…horrible lighting. But you get the idea. She will be a nice addition to my WW2 collection.

Here is better lighting. There is a tad bit of silvering around some of the decal edges…sigh. But overall they are good decals, but you have to work very fast and get them in location and brush out. ;)IMG_6632.jpeg

Are the speed brakes PE, or did your laboriously drill out molded ones?

Dear Dean. What can I say? She's a beauty. Now will you please get going with my Nieuport? ROTF
