H.M.S Enterprise plank on frame CAF Models 1/48.

Hi Maarten, the wipe on poly is similar to Minwax satin oil based, but the brand I am using is Feast Watson.

I have assembled the rudder. Its comprised of three pieces of timber and I used black paper between the pieces to simulate the joins.
Not sure if thats historically correct or not to have caulking on the rudder. IMG_0116[1].JPG
 
The hull looks fantastic and when I read that it took an estimated 6,000 trees to build the Victory I begin to see why. My next build after the Mary Rose is going to have to be an admiralty style model and I am watching the debates on Chinese kits with great interest - I do hope Admin set up a separate forum group on that. I do not have the hardware you do, although I like to think that I am a reasonably good modeller, and my question is this - could you yourself have built this model without the use of a lathe, milling machine etc? Cheers.

Hi Graham,
I thought the same as you and I have built a full scratch model plank on frame of Reverend Romero's Royal yacht Fubbs.
I did however find it tedious cutting billets of timber and hundreds of frame pieces. These plank on frame models are still an enormous challenge, but you are not bogged down with a year or two of cutting frames.
 
Feeling a bit sad today. I lost a ship modelling friend.

So thought I would take my mind off matters and get back into the workshop. Started marking out my planking and I fixed the first plank in place. These Boxwood clamps are wonderful for clamping planks to frames.

thanks for prompting me to post. I have been a bit down since my friend and fellow forum member Geoff passed away suddenly.

Anyway, I have finally got back into my workshop this week and finished installing the rudder hinges. I cut rebates into the wood so they are flush and I will paint them black.

Good to see you working and thanks for your update.
the rudder is looking realy good. Are the used metal elements of the rudder hinges etc. part of the kit?
And related to your second post: the frames are looking realy good. Very clean work on the „wooden walls“. I can recognize, that the frames of the Enterprise are more heavier and thicker, than on the Salamandre, so I have to be realy careful with the sanding of them. They should be at the end smooth for the installation of in- and outside planking, like yours.......your model is realy looking good!

My condoleance with the loss of Geoff, I didn't knew him but from the posts in the memoriam I read he was of great help to you all.

Nice work, the hull is looking stunning. Is there a reason that you paint the hinges instead of burnishing these?

Hi Maarten and Ewe,
with regards to the rudder hinges they were included in the kit and are solid cast brass which is very unusual.

Most kits have that horrible cast white metal. I usually blacken my brass with Casey brass blackening formula, but need to assess whether I can do this or just paint the hinges black. I have already glued them in position.
