I like your workmanship and also watching the build progress. Showing the steps in the build on how to use the clamps ias a great way of educating you model ship builders. I will be following along an no doubt will see it in person through its stages.

Hi Brian,

Nice effect with the black paper chalking in between the joints, very subtile. Are you using this over the full lenght of the joint and then glue both sides of the wood enclosing the paper? Is it affecting the strenght of the glued joint?
I think I will start using this also for larger joints, gives exactly the effect you need whereas paint or a marker gets also into the pores of the wood itself.

Hi Maarten,
the black paper caulking is a bit of a complicated process. First of all do not buy black paper. The commercial black paper is too refined and not suitable, as it does not allow the glue to penetrate through the pours of the paper properly..
You need brown paper similar to what you get from a grocery shop for your fruit in a brown paper bag if you follow what I mean, then cut it into slivers and soak in diluted black acrylic paint and then hang out to dry.

The next phase in my construction schedule is the assembly of the framing jig for the hull.

I have to say, while the model itself is beautifully laser cut and fits together perfectly, it was not the case with this plywood framing jig. All the slots were about .5 mm too small and a considerable amount of filing and adjustment was required to get everything fitting together. There were no English instructions, only a few basic assembly diagrams and a considerable amount of head scratching was done to figure out the complicated process of assembling the interlocking parts.

I have also started to assemble the frames which is a most enjoyable experience.

As stated before, solid Cherry, very sharp and accurately cut. There are 16 individual pieces glued together in a double lamination per frame. Photo below is before sanding and cleaning up. I still need to bevel the edges.IMG_2397.JPG

Back at the work bench this week and been busy assembling frames.

I have found this kit a most enjoyable build so far, and its been a real pleasure gluing together all the frames which can be a tedious task.

A few pictures below of the latest status of my build log, which has seen about 15 frames glued up and rough sanded. Also some of the frames have been installed on the keel using the framing jig.IMG_0017.JPGIMG_0019.JPG

The yard workers have been send home for the weekend? Look like the real thing with the full ribs construction.

Do you also add the lower decks, don't think these are provided in the kit?

Just re-read your log...... Fantastic mate. These Chinese manufacturers has left the others for dead in their details. All the other non Chinese kit manufacturers, have pull up there socks, or they will be out of business very soon.
Brilliant work my friend. I'll be watching and posting more now, that we are almost settled into our new home.

Very interesting build and looking forward to follow your progress. I never have never seen such a detailed and pre prepared ready to go POF kit like this. I like your idea with the paper caulking.
I can understand why kits like this would be appealing for modellers in China who want to build an advanced model. Most of the population live in apartments and would not have the luxury of a garage or workshop space to work in. Having everything precut is the way to go as scratch building will not be an option for the majority. I am going to have to get one of these big face kits.
