I do have a question for you or anyone else, about the quarterdeck access ladder.
Wouldn't each rung/step have something for the hands to grip, instead of a smooth top surface? With the steps both wet and rolling up to 30 degrees, I would be terrified to climb the ladder without some sort of handhold. Below is a picture of what I did with the steps on my HMS Serapis, thinking I could actually make it up a ladder like this.
I have no reference or photos showing this idea, just my intuition, which is frequently wrong.
One downside of doing this would be pooling of water, causing rot, in these cutouts. Any feedback would be appreciated.
