Hello —

My name is Merl. I live in Tucson, Arizona. I’ve been following this forum for some time now and it’s time I introduced myself. I’ve been tinkering all my life and since retirement, I’ve worked mostly on miniature wagons and sleighs. I’ve always wanted to build a model ship and finally have started it. I currently have two projects. The first is a Model Shipways Bluenose and the second is a Yuanqing Blue Nose. The second one will be built as a frame only — to go with the Model Shipways model. The ship building has been (and is still) a huge learning experience.

I chose the Bluenose because my wife’s grandparents were all from Nova Scotia and because someone in the family has a picture of my mother-in-law on the deck of the Bluenose. She appeared to be about 16 or 17 years old so that would mean the picture was probably taken around 1940 - 1941.

This forum has been a huge help in my ship building adventure.

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum

Welcome Merl,

I also have a house in Tucson and will be probably living there full time next year. If I may offer some advice, Try some easier wooden boat models before you tackle the Bluenoses. I think they will really help you get up to speed and avoid a lot of mistakes. I have been perusing the Bluenose building groups here for a while. I know Ted Robinson is building his bluenose after building a few Model expo beginner boats.

I would start with the model expo's grand banks dory, and perhaps the Norwegian sailing pram.

Model Shipways Shipwright 3 Kit Combo Series-MS1474

You can buy them individually or as a set. I found them invaluable in starting to understand how to work with wooden boats. The learning curve and complexity is much better if you start off with a more simple project.

I would contact Ted for his experience in doing a few of the "starter" boats before he tackled his Bluenose.

I hope you start a build log, and I look forward to seeing your builds!

Rob

Rob -- I've discovered and read many blogs for the Bluenose. Their help has been immense. I would name names, but I would probably miss a few and I don't want to do that. Your advice on starting with a simpler build is valid. I in fact, I did that - sort of. I did build a canoe kit several years ago and this time I started with Model Shipways Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack. I probably should have built another simpler model, but it is too late for that now. The bottom line is that I am really enjoying the journey and looking forward to the completion of the projects.

As an aside, I am unaware of any other model ship builders inTucson. I have found people that race R/C boats, but that does not paricularly interest me.

Thanks again for your coments.

Hi Merl. Nice to see that you are going to build 2 Bluenoses. Perhaps you have already seen this group-build area:
—> Bluenose PoF Groep Build <—
In the Main Support Page I have posted a list of BN build. Not only from YuanQing but also from other manufacturers with a lot from Model Shipways:

—> BN-list <—
In the 5th column (E) yiou find a hyperlink to the build-log of the builds.
It would be very interesting to start a build-log. You can write there all the questions you have and I am sure you wil get some answers in no time.
When I noticed the log I will ad it to the list.
Regards, Peter
