I live at the foot of the Humber Bridge along the coast from Grimsby and across from Kingston upon Hull.
Was awed when I visited HMS Victory at Portsmouth as a young boy. When in Devon a few years later my parents told me we were looking at the Mayflower replica before it sailed for USA. It was only a few weeks ago I found this could not be true and we must be seeing Golden Hinde replica currently on the Thames. Did get to see Mayflower 2 about 25 years ago along with USS Constitution when we visited Boston, USA.
Have also toured the Australian Endeavour replica when it came to Hull again about 25 years ago. Saw HMS Trincomalee (second oldest warship afloat) in Hartlepool 3 or 4 years ago.

Hallo Steve,
sending you a warm welcome here on board of our forum - Seems, that you are the replica-specialist - lucky you

Dave Will try and did out photos but many were pre-digital. I do know that Mayflower are all in a 3D system, Trincomalee are few and boring but I will have a few Victory all I have to do is find out how to post.
Niallmhor49 sorry I'm from N.Lincolnshire, I lived in East Yorks for 20 years and my son is a Yorkshire man but I'm back in Lincs now.

If you want some photos of HMS Tricomalee ? Please let me know as I'm going up to Hartlepool in December to see a friend.

one thing about this forum is collecting information. Any and all photos even if you think they are boring they just might have a gem of information for someone else.
So if you do go see the HMS Tricomalee lots and lots of photos would be well appreciated here on the forum.

humm pre-digital how did the people get along in such primative times?

as far as posting images it is quite simple and folks here would be happy to help you do that. there is an ATTACH FILE at the lower left corner. Only thing to watch out for is making sure the images are rotated correctly.

Sorry about that , you're a New Hollander I miss read your post

Niallmhor49 by coincidence you are right I am a New Hollander because from my ancestry research I am descended from Dutch Huguenots who came across in the mid 1600's. We in Lincolnshire tend to call ourselves Yella Bellies.

Hi Steve ,
Is the Lincoln Castle still in Grimby or has she scrapped like the trawlers?
I can remember when her and her sisters used to cross the Humber from Hull to New Holland , there seems to be a lack of respect for the old ships now around the Humber .

Very sad tale - group was formed in Hull to which I belonged to buy the Lincoln Castle and restore it and birth at Hull. Was being cut up for scrap in Grimsby but owners refused to sell. Some bits were saved by private collectors but not many. Tattershall Castle as far as I know is still on the Thames. Wingfield Castle is in Hartlepool next to HMS Trincomalee and was being restored but I heard last month it was currently closed to visitors.
When the Lincoln Castle was operating as a restaurant moored at Hessle next to the Humber Bridge I went for a meal there - we were the only people in the restaurant that night as it was a foul night and Feb 13th (fully booked for the 14th)

Welcome Steve - Re Lincoln Castle - The sad fact is that interest in merchant shipping is almost zero, most attempts to save old ships usually end in failure. Glenlee, Great Britain and Cutty Sark are notable exceptions of restoration, but most are doomed to failure through lack of interest (if it doesn't have guns, it doesn't count:confused:). I only build model merchant ships. Isle of Jersey (Large).JPG

Have to say 'wow' to your model, Shipbuilder.
The great sadness about the Lincoln Castle was that it was a really loved ship and there was a great deal of local support to acquire and restore. For whatever reason the two brothers scrapping it were determined to continue with its' destruction. It had the most beautiful engine - all shiny brass and pistons which was my most vivid memory of the vessel.

Thanks,
In my shooldays, I sailed in a number of the old Clyde paddle steamers, such as Waverly, Caledonia and Jeannie Deans, and remember those shining engines and pistons sliding up and down - works of art in themselves!
I never had the patience or temperment to build kits. Couldn't understand instructions, couldn't get parts to fit etc, and bored out of my mind with rigging. The sad thing is that most people tend to convince themselves they can't scrathbuild and stick to the more difficult and expensive option of kits. Wish I had £1 for each time I heard someone say, "I don't have the skills!" :) None of my models have any knots in the rigging as it is all short lengths of wire just glued on - and virtually no decorative carving to struggle with.
I never even got out of the lower class at woodwork and metalwork at school, and my work was classed as "Poor." Trouble is, I never believed them and just persevered.
