HIGH HOPES, WILD MEN AND THE DEVIL’S JAW - Willem Barentsz Kolderstok 1:50

@RDN1954 I forgot to comment on the "extensive re-do in Harlingen". That will never happen, my friend. The christening of "De Witte Swaen" (each time I type that, I am irritated beyond belief), was a marketing exercise at the time when funds for the project were intended to be raised by means of a lottery with a house as prize. That never materialized as not enough tickets were sold and/or funds were raised.

And do you think that you can share this knowledge with us my friend? or was this ment to be for a next installment??
I did not intend it as a next instalment, Peter. Before I can publish it, I need to be satisfied that those drawings were indeed based on the findings of the expedition. You can imagine that communication is not always easy.

yes, Heinrich, i can imagine that communication has its difficulties,, you have overcome quite a lot of diffculties, so i think this issue wil also be solved, we wil see it in due time i guess.

OMG, how did I miss your birthday Heinrich!?!? A belated very Happy Birthday to you sir! I love the team/family photo. It says everything! I wish you good fortune in the upcoming year!

Yes, my friend. All will come in good time. At this stage I don't want to spend too much time thinking about another build; I first want to complete my ship. :)

Hi Ken! No problem my friend - belated is just as good! Thank you very much for the birthday and well wishes - they are very much appreciated!

As a parting shot I can show you how the Russians interpreted the WB.

You can clearly see the Mercurius name on the plaque. Note the much more pronounced (deeper and fatter) "belly", the railings on the fore-midships and aft-decks, the five cannon ports (the same as Zhdan's model) and the re-introduction of the helmsman's hut. @Kolderstok Hans must be smiling. In essence all three Russian variations I have seen are very close to one another - there are only small differences.

And talking about scale and size - how does this scale grab you?

Hi Heinrich, is that a very small man ? JJ..

Thank you, my friend and apologies for the late reply. I had an amazing birthday to say the least. There is one other gift which has a very strong nautical theme, but "discretion" prevents me from showing it here!
Good morning Heinrich. Now you have perked my curiosity and my imagination….could be dangerous .

The expedition by the Russian team is exciting. It will be brilliant once they can determine the finite scientific conclusions and those “niggling” could be’s answered.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful find…looking forward to the plans and details once the secretive explorers disclose more.
Cheers Grant

I'm very well aware of the foolishness of my remark, hinting at a re-do of the she-who-must-not-be-named. I agree with you though, it'll never happen...
According to their website they are scheduling a maiden voyage this year.

Hi Grant - as to the gift, I will send you a PM.

I'm afraid that there is not much more that we will get from Russia. The radiocarbon analysis has proved conclusively that what they have found, is Barentsz's ship. At the same time there is no doubt in the Russian researchers' minds that Barentsz's ship was called De Mercurius either. Therefore, they do not see the need for any further expeditions. And that, my friend, is pretty much that.

Indeed, Johan. That maiden voyage was scheduled for 2022 as well and, as you know, nothing happened. To me - I am afraid - the whole replica-build is very much of a non-entity. At the beginning of my build, when I was still a naive and handsome young man ( ROTF) , I was excited about it, but now that I am old and wise to misinterpretations, summations and assumptions, I pay it no attention whatsoever.

Well, let's wait and see; 2023 still counts 10 months, so there are still countless opportunities to realise her maiden voyage.
As to being a no-entity, I'm in no position to comment on that, lacking the knowledge and experience to do so.
I am assuming the shipwright in Harlingen did his research, resulting in the current configuration. I don't know why the Russian data were (apparently) not taken into account.
What I want to add in favor of the builder is that he is one of the precious few trying to keep our Dutch sea faring history alive. That fact alone should earn him quite a few credits.

As far as being naive, handsome and young; young, I have no issue with that; we all were young, once. Being naive, that might have been true as well, once. As to handsome, I don't think all the beauty sleep in the world is enough to justify that claim. Maybe the Admiral thinks otherwise, but I don't think she's sufficiently objective. ;)
