HMAV Bounty 1:48 (based on) Artesania Latina Kit

Part 9: The masts
October 2023

The next step was to make the masts. I only used the round timber from the kit.
AL included grates in the kit for the platforms. However, these were of such poor quality that they were unusable. Below is a photo from the Artesania Latinas manual.

Although I read somewhere that Lieutenant Bligh had the Bounty (Bethia) fitted with platforms with grates, I decided to make the platforms solid. I then scratch-built them using pear wood.
The result can be seen below with a (large) number of photos. Have a great weekend!
Cheers Erik

Thank you all for these nice comments!!

Indeed, your aging and weathering technique is masterful. That would make for a great tutorial series here on the forum (hint, hint). ;)
Perhaps I will indeed try to explain how I age my wood. It's not really that complicated. With the right choice of wood and then the right stain and oil, a lot can be achieved.

grated tops which I believe were introduced when they changed the HMS Bertha to HMAV Bounty. Cheers
That's right, Grant. Although the tops of the Bethia have indeed been replaced by gratings, I also made the tops solid. The gratings from the kit were of such poor quality that it was impossible to make nice symmetrical grated tops.
That's why I had to scratch them. I made it a bit easier for myself with solid tops.

I'll add my vote for information on how you achieve the wood finishes and patina on your model. It is extremely well done and lifelike, probably the most realistic I've see. Excellent work!!

Truly outstanding ropework! Wow! This is not just next level, it's top level.
Thanks a lot! Great compliment!

What a great set up upgrades and customizations to what I suspect is a rather ordinary kit offering from AL.
Thank you too, Paul! I did indeed start with the Artesania Latina kit as a basis.

I'll show you here soon which combination of wood, stain, and oil I use. Because that's basically what it is. Apart from occasionally roughening and sanding the wood, I don't use any secret tricks or anything like that :p;)
