Using the collets beats having to make cutters when the diameters are correct. Thanks for sharing this!
Allan
Good morning Allan. It is my lazy side coming out. Most definitely making cutters to the correct scale will make for cleaner and consistent diameters. I do make the diameters marginally oversized and the turn the wheel on - tiny final sand.
Cheers Grant

Good morning. We have had our first winter rain here in Cape Town and that means some shipyard time.
Some work on the cannons - Fixing trunnions and placing the IMG_8518.jpegIMG_8517.jpeg
The maple bulkwalk planks have bugged me since I layed them. The kit (and real ship) had these painted red so I get why these were maple. I am not painting my ship other than some black and the look and feel of the “white” maple never made me happy.
So…..I cut some 5mm cherry veneer planks and redid them……soooooo much better.

I also decide to add one row of the diminishing planks below the wales. These should be in the top butt pattern however I only want one row not two so stuck with a regular single row……hmmm more like I was too lazy to attempt hand cutting these again ROTF . I also chose not to bend these at the stern around to the deck transom - I want this section open.
Here is where she sits right now. I have so much finishing to do as I found cherry wood darkens very quickly and my final sanding must be done right before I oil her. I am very encouraged so far……..let see;)

I love the choice of cherry for the bulwarks. it tones it down nicely and looks great. Your masterpiece is coming along nicely !

That is looking much better, Grant.

Beautiful work. Lovely tones and colouring on that wood. Great skill.
Good morning Neil. Thank you. I am looking forward to the final sanding and then putting some Linseed oil on her. Holding thumbs it all comes out cool.

Good morning Jeff. I could not see that maple for another day ROTF . That you for the compliment.
Awesome job!!
Thank you Paul. I am struggling some with the kit and the directions scale to the actual 1:1 plan…..giving me plenty of full swear jarsROTF. I will prevail one way or the other.
Yup, the cherry is a much better choice. Well done Grant.
True story Daniel :D.
I love how the addition of one hull plank sets off the black wale. Brilliant.

I was also not fangirling the maple. Good call on replacing it.
Good morning Paul. The wales are also pretty thick and just looked out of place. The addition of the diminishing plank also “smoothed” this out aesthetically. Maple, unless for a deck or painted is a no go- I tend to learn the hard wayROTF.
That is looking much better, Grant.

Thank you kindly Peter.
Beautiful workmanship Grant. Well done.
Thank you Bryian. Whew I’m finding this kit a little bit of a challenge. You made a beautiful rendition of this kit - I’m finding my measurements in relation to the directions and some parts don’t fit the scale plans so I’m making plenty adjustments. This makes for challenging modelling for my skill level- more fun than a “real plug and play” kit tho.
Grant, she looks awesome!

I'm glad you aren't painting her. The contrasting wood does a fine job giving her life and color. Great decision, switching to Cherry!

Thanks for sharing!
Good morning Brad. I always appreciate you having a look at my build. Thank you for the compliments.
Looking great! ;)
Thank you kindly. Cheers Grant

Hi Grant, I just saw your Enterprise log and wow! Your work is fantastic, the results so far are truly amazing, and the quality of the wood used in the kit is breathtaking! It's a world away from the normal manufacturers, and I think I'll give it a try someday. Many congratulations!
