Good morning. The family and friends went to Johannesburg to watch Calvin race the MXGP this weekend.We have not had a GP in SA for 20 years and to have a South African and a close friend made it very special. Calvin also ride like a demon and came 4th overall .

Good morning gentlemen. Thanks for these replies. It was a very good weekend - love every moment. Calvin wore the green and gold of the SA rugby team who whipped England later that afternoon .

Good morning.

As always I’m doing a whole load of different things - I love waking up and deciding “what do I feel like playing with this fine morning “.

So:
Rigged two more cannon tackle :




Love the drill slip

I have also been doing some quarter deck beams, knees etc……hmmmmmmm. I am sticking with the kit plan and my upper deck will have a margin plank to do some cover up of Grants not so perfect notches, cutting and shaping…..


I did put a dust cover on however dust still decided to invade my work - DUST INVADERS

As always plenty clean up, stain second coats etc caused my Grants full throttle, no finesse modelling…..

Ps- the frustration I am having with this kit (my own fault for deciding to give my ship an open and no paint look) is if you sand the char and laser burn off completely the size of the parts no longer work. It gives a dirty used look which I am starting to like as I go. It is not what I wanted tho.

What you are doing Grant is a brilliant job! I particularly like your choice of finnish, you have given your HMS Enterprise a trun resemblance to the great Navy Board models of the 18th Century.

Thank you very much Paul. This build has been a self inflicted challenge (a very enjoyable one) at every turn which is everything we can ask for. .

Actually I love the color of your wood, what stain are you using? are you then varnishing over it? Thanks!

Good morning Paul. I’m using 4 different options to get some shades of cherry.
1. On the frames and beams etc I use polyurethane Matt ( water based).
2. the bulkwarks and cannon ports I use a more redder cherry stain (Woodoc Gel stain).
I give this one coat of polyurethane.
3. Where I want a more richer, darker cherry I use linseed oil ( this is dust magnet and drives me nuts) e.g cannon carriages and panels on the removable bulkheads. No polyurethane.
4. Indian ink for black.

It has been a vertical learning using stains only and many errors have been made- e.g. my cut outs where the maple edges show, the red cherry just won’t go into the maple and the red is different. Not too visible but of course I see it all the time.

Good morning Stephan. True story my ship is full of humanities . Yea I didn’t think of putting a treenail in my carriage. I now have a beam over it so a musket hole shall remain.

I agree that a musket ball hole is exactly the same size as a misplaced treenail hole!

As others have said, it's looking more and more like an Admiralty model, seen in museums, from centuries ago.

Good morning Brad. Thank you. It is the first time I've attempted using stains and truth be told it has been plenty of trial and error. It took a while but I feel I have the tones where I want them. Authenticity went out the window a long time ago and I reverted to just modifying the kit where I could do so. It is slowly, slowly coming together. So much to do tho, which is a good thing.
