HMS Leopard 1790

On the chains, they often stored spare elements like spars etc. but also in the time of rowing (frigates with sweep ports) the oars.

I guess it could be this - but maybe you show us a link or a photo which is describing it better

Can someone tell me what are the two "spars" laying hooked outside the main chains. Are they some sort of fish tackle or spars.
G'day, they are the booms that would be swung out when they were using the stun sails,
Best regards John,

Thanks, yes that's the correct photo, the hook on the end was confusing me.
I thought they were the spiniker poles for when they were racing LOL, actually maybe these were the predecessors to a spiniker on modern boats

Now you've got me wondering. Did all the stunsail booms have the hooks or just the fore and main course ones? I put the hooks on all the booms and used them to lash the booms to the yard. I haven't made the lower booms yet, you just reminded me :) .

Hi Don, it looks like the top ones were iron hoops on the yards, the main courses lent themselves to that arrangement, then they can also be stowed in position as well

G'day Don, the hooks were just on the Booms on the channels, the upper one's were as Dr Syn said, Run through hoops on the yards,
Best regards John,

The studding sail booms on the yards are very good visible at Johanns alias @archjofo model

I am not sure, if his ship has also the lower booms at the channels ..... but maybe Johann could explain or show us

Thanks guys. So the upper ones were lashed through the hole in the end I guess. I don't know if I'll remove hooks I have or just leave them. ----I just went and looked and it doesn't look to bad, I should be able to get to them. Drilling the hole and lashing them might be tough though.
