HMS Portland 1770 by Trussben - Portland Scale Ship Co. - 1:48 - 50 gun 4th rate.

Hi All,

Im going to start a build log of my latest model kit of HMS Portland 1770, which was a 4th rate of 50guns.
This kit is currently not available yet for general sale and I was asked by the designer to build one of the first prototypes, this will be a Hybrid POF/POB kit in the classic 1:48 scale, size will be very large in this scale without any masts or rigging.
The kit as I said is currently still under development but here you can see what the designer is aiming for it to look like and represent the Marshall paintings of the contempory model.

I shall keep updating this log as the build progresses.

Great news! and...what a ship!!!
 
Here are the first few Starboard side frames installed, we will begin to get a proper feel for what the model is going to look like now.
The designer has left lots of “meat on the bones” for later fairing of the hull when framing is complete.

Hey Ben, it's John from NY..we never got to meet in Glens falls..anyway, do you have an anticipated release date.. finished my Confederacy, working on my 1/30 Royal Caroline ..your prototype looks great..hopefully released as one complete kit, but being stateside, shipping, tarriffs not an issue with multiple parts.

Hey John

I believe this kit will be released in Chapters as there is so much of it, Chapter 1 is pretty big!
I’m not sure about release dates as the designer wants to get the prototype pretty far along before he starts selling them, I wouldn’t expect it before the end of this year but who knows.
 
Thanks. Ben..following your progress..I have purchased a goodly amount of swiss pear, boxwood and holly from a fellow in Fl.. what species of wood are the frames ?

My Prototype was supplied in really nice quality Swiss Pearwood from Gilmer, I believe that the designer will be offering it in AYC and an upgrade to Pear for extra $$
 
I have not used ayc I have looked at Enterprize build from Caf or ZHL,, add shipping ,tarriffs, gets pricey..I also prefer Admiralty style builds with open below decks..I did that with the RC ,so your Portland has even more possibilities..I also light my ships.
