HMS Royal Caroline kit ZHL 1/30 (Following the Maarten's RC)

so I would not change anything here
Dear John,
Thank you!
So, I will do the change indicated above, and insert +29, well, probably +25mm.
@Maarten is right: it will affect the relative position of masts. But I tend to decide that it's ok, 25mm is not a big deal.
So, if Maarten will not be against, I leave masts as they are now and hope that the ship will not look too terrible.
Anyway, John and Maarten, thank you very much!
We cut it today and will see how it goes.

I brought a line down on the plan from the front and back of the main mast for a reference,

2.jpg
I also squared the mast across the ship and then placed a piece of timber in front of it the thickness of the mast,

3.jpg
and looking square on to the timber, this timber comes right down through the head of the cherub, whereas on the
plan the front of the mast is 6mm in front of this, see next pic,

So I reckon if I was going to do it I would add 12 - 15 mm at the back of frame 6, this is still the dead flat area and you
would not be changing the hull shape, also bulkhead 7 is the front of the cabin and you do not want to be changing
this, then after the addition you can work out the new position for the mast,
I hope all this is clear enough,

best regards john,
.

If you add 25mm in the one place it will put all the cabin out, you will have to add 12 - 15 mm behind frame 6, this will give you enough room for the boarding steps and not interfere with the cabin or the hull shape as this is the dead flat area, then if you want to add more after the cabin you will have to be careful and the only way I can see you doing it is to add 12 - 15 mm to the length back at the transom,

best regards john,

The drawing showing the Quarter gallery right back,

My mistake it should have been further back, you have to get the sheave right back in the corner and the carving right
in front of it,

4.jpg
shows where I had to trim the eagles wing back,

.6.jpg
and a pic from the builders manual which shows they had to trim some from the wing also,

Alex I'm sure that which ever way you go it will look fantastic, so if you can put in the 29mm in one go and work it out
then it will be a lot easier, after every model we make we always say there was something else that could have been
done differently, so enjoy your modeling and don't let it drive you crazy, :):):),

best regards John,

Dear John (@neptune ),
Sorry, just to double check, my idea was:
- to extend the skeleton of hull, which means I am free to build anything on top of this structure, so
- when the hull is planked, I can distribute (with two-sided scotch tape) all the carvings and let THEM decide where do I put all the elements of the ship: the cabin, the boarding steps, and even the masts (although those holes are so nice...). So I thought I do not have to make these decisions now...

But your text makes me believe I have a flaw in my way of logic. Do I?

Best Regards,
Alex

Issue: Color scheme.
Decision: I have noticed that 15% of the ship cost were in plating the gold over the carvings. Well, I decided to follow it. It's a funny story of all these financial troubles they had. The gold is bright, so I decided to make the blue darker and probably make the whole ship darker.
There will be no white at the bottom.

Hi Alex,

Historically Blue was one of the most expensive colors and therefore used in small quantaties. The old blue paints were made with Lapis Lazulli gem stones or with smalt, a blue colored glas pigment used in a lot of 17th century paintings for the blue sky.
Since 1723 a new blue color came to the market, Berlin or Prussian blue.
See the pigment below and tjis is close to your color of choice.
Only a small off topic ......
A good friend of mine wrote a book about the color blue in ship construction
It is "THE COLOUR BLUE IN HISTORIC SHIPBUILDING - From Antiquity to Modern Times"
written by Joachim Müllerschön and translated and edited by David Antscherl

I guess it is time for a book review here in SOS

Issue: Position of the masts.
Decision: All masts will be re-positioned (first picture, red lines). At the same time, to save time, I allow the same distance between the foremast and the main mast as indicated on the main deck panel. I will have to shift the panel (we started to plank it before I have realized we had to cut the ship) 10 mm backward, and then it will be ok (as depicted on the second picture with two red lines). Planks will be extended for these 10 mm forward (anyway, nobody will see that they were cut initially in the wrong place) and a little bit aside, to compensate the shift of the panel.

G'day Alex, what my worry was that on the photo you posted it showed you were going to cut the through in the cabin part and that is where the floors rise, see pic below, but I see that you ended up cutting through on the dead flat and everything looks OK, out of Curiosity and also for anyone else who may build the RC how much did you insert into the keel and deck,

Insertion plan 1.JPG

I look forward to the rest of your build,

best regards John,

Oh and one more thing Alex, you mentioned something about planks, I have approx 90 left from my RC, the one's that have two small holes in one end a one in the other end, you can have them if you need them, just PM me your name and address and I will post them to you,

Best regards John,
