HMS Victory help with selection

I found two topics, which are maybe helping to make a decision .....

1) Unboxing the Caldercraft Victory kit by @Hoss6262

and
2) the finished Victory built by @Ken

Maybe you think about it once more....
You will work on this model for 1, 2 or even more years. Maybe 1.000 hours
The Caldercraft version is more expensive, yes, but is with big distance the the best Victory model - with much better quality etc.
So you would maybe pay 0,50 Euro / working hour more -> and you would get more fun and less frustration for the hole 1.000 hours
That's a good point, Uwek. Indeed Panart's and sergal's versions aren't excellent in any respect ... IMHO.

@Ken's (the "other" Ken) :) shows a wonderful example of the completed Caldercraft HMS Victory. I'm sure he can offer a very in-depth impression of the kit as he has completed his journey. Again, a great, accurate example of HMS Victory.

I did do an unboxing of the kit to share my impression of it for the SoS community. I did sell my Caldercraft HMS Victory to another SoS member when I decided to start scratch building. I can say, with confidence, the kit is of very high quality. All of the wood, hardware fittings, rope and brass photo etching pieces are top notch. There is no cheap casted "white metal" parts. The guns are all turned brass. The instructions and plans seem quite clear. But again, since @Ken actually built the model he would be able to provide a better impression on how well they served him.

Uwek makes a very good point, no surprise there. ;) This is a very comprehensive kit. It would take you a few years to complete, so the investment can be realized over that time. If I were to build any HMS Victory from a kit, it would be Caldercraft's HMS Victory and no other. I am confident you would NOT be disappointed with this kit.

I hope this helps you in your decision making process.

Cheers,
Ken

Have a look at this website where you can follow the construction of the Caldercraft Victory step-by-step.
It will give you a very good idea of how this model has been conceived and how it all fits together.

Greetings to those present here. Please help me choose a kit manufacturer.
I am planning to build an HMS Vicory but I don't know which manufacturer.

I choose between:
HMS Victory 1:78 - Mantua (Sergal)
HMS Victory 1:75 - Billing Boats
HMS Victory 1:78 - Panart

I definitely prefer the detail and quality of workmanship. Alternatively, recommend another manufacturer. Thank you.

Už jste se konečně rozhodli, jakou sadu si koupíte?
Děkuji za přání k narozeninám. Rozhodl jsem se pro Caldercraft, ale nebude to hned. Děkuji za pomoc s výběrem.

Thank you for your birthday wishes. I've decided on Caldercraft, but it won't be right away. Thank you for your help with the selection.

You are welcome
Hope to see a building log - it is a very interesting kit!

As I gather from the members experienced with this and other kits of this ship, you have made a good choice. This really sounds like a case of you get what you pay for. ( Not always true in this hobby.) I hope your choice will provide you with many hours of enjoyment and satisfaction. You have your work cut out for you. But as you can gather from all the support you have experienced so far, you have a very large group on this forum with experience building this model who, I am sure, are ready and eager to help you with the process. Happy modelling! Thumbs-Up :)

Pete

None of the above.

If you want a good kit bashing - Chinese. V good.

Caldicraft review look good.

Anyone out there in the forum can help via kits?

Hey PhillipCollis, I am building this same one from AliExpress the 1:150 model right now and have been doing so over the last two months. Almost completed the hull planking.

I would not recommend beginners to cut their teeth on this cheaper but complex plywood lazer model. There are no real plans or directions for this model just a few drawn pictures with numberings. A lot of in the dark areas that you will have to search on YouTube to fill in the gaps. You can also review GorHog’s build on here of the same model.

Incidentally PC, I am also in NZ Auckland.

Did you decide in the meantime?

Neither you suggested

If possible go to shop and look.

I’m not a kit builder but read / seen

Skill level is critical as well as problem solving.

totally agree with Uwe,my vote goes for the Jokita/Caldercraft kit.To my knowledge, the only error on Caldercraft's kit is the lack of split/scarphed skid beams for the ships boats. These are depicted as one complete piece. This is an easy fix using spare timber in the kit.
All other kit's are full of compromises and historical inaccuracies, chances are you will end up making changes and find you could end up spending more than the higher price of Jokita's kit.

Kind Regards”

That's a wise hint!

have you contemplated Occre's?
IMHO for the price it has far too many mistakes. Some of these are quite obvious such as the twisted wire decoration on the main rail at the head, incorrect cannon pattern, and gratings that are totally out of scale. There are more, but these jump out as someone's fantasy at OcCre rather than being at least a little bit more realistic. I am in communication with them now regarding these and they are quite receptive to getting this information. I have no idea what they will do with it, but they seem to be genuinely interested. An example showing the main head rail is below. The left is the OcCre design, the contemporary model is Victory 1765 and the last is Victory today which is based on her time at Trafalgar.

Hello everyone,
I tried a few days ago to order a figurehead for a 1/200 Victory from Shapeways because the one that Caldercraft provides in their kit is not even to consider. But... just heard from Ben from MidwestModelShop that Shapeways went bankrupt. Now I'm looking where to find the stuff that was offered on their site. I also tried to order several items for my Trumpeter RMS Titanic. I build both models simultaneously. I have bought almost all of the parts that Woody's offers on his site, but still looking for more parts to enhance my models. Anyway the Figurehead for the HMS Victory is the most important for now because the thin one provided from Caldercraft really looks like a peace of cr... Sorry.
Thanks for any response. Daniel
