I came across SOS and am blown away. I started building my Mantua 1:98 HMS Victory almost 25 years ago. The kit was a gift from my wife ad is my first build. Corporate life kept me away from progressing for many years.....and then Covid came and I could start gocusing on my build. After that I retired and moved to Jeffreys Bay in South Africa. I have now started the rigging and looking forward to complete my Victory. Here are some photos of my build. Being my first build I decided to stick to the plans included in the kit, but that the Mantua plans fo have shortcomings. So excuse inaccuracies, but as my first build....the Victory is a challenge.

Hi Gilbertm I am fortunate to be in Cape Town at the moment and went to visit Grant on Tuesday to admire his beautiful Victory model and got some good tips from him. 20241119_172527.jpg

HMS Victory first build...... why do we do this to ourselves? My first TWO builds were Victory scratch builds. I could not afford a kit but had hand me down tools from my grandfather and father and had a used copy of Longridge's Anatomy of Nelson's Ships. I actually sold the first one and the second is still in the family, a bit worse for wear from moves all over the US in the past 50 years.

Jeffrey's Bay....... I wanted to surf Cape St. Francis from the time I saw The Endless Summer. Made it east and west of you back in the day with ports of call in Cape Town and East London. My roomie and I did get a ride to Kidd's Beach and surfed for a day so we had a great experience. Would love to go back.

Thank you for a great post Allan. You are welcome to come and vist Jeffreys Bay and surf one of the world top 10 surf spots.

While I can still swim rather well, mortality has set in and for me surfing is on a par with the idea of mountain climbing or sky diving, none of which are in my future. Now, if I could talk the admiral into it I would look seriously at Crystal Cruise itineraries that hit a number of SA ports such as Cape Town, Mossel Bay. P.E. and Durban. The idea of meeting up for dinner with Grant and you is a great incentive.

Hi Johann! I'm currently building the same model, in the 1:78 version. I agree with Jimsky, as a first build the Victory is really a challenge! You are lucky to be near Grant Tyler, who is a great builder and gave me some useful suggestions.
