My condolences John for the loss of your friend Patrick.
He has reached a respectable age and I hope we too can actively participate in this hobby at the age of 90. Patrick was gifted as we can see on his model based purely on photo's.

May he rest in peace.

Thank you all for the comments on Patrick's passing, they are much appreciated.

I have inherited a couple of Patrick's boats and quite a number of his tools, I was asked to pick what i wanted and I said that I would like the small hand tools that he used, his sons sorted them out for me and also included a Proxxon Drill and Drill stand which was very kind of them, I was also asked to pick a boat and I chose a sailing model of a Galway Hooker, which was in quite a bad condition, but i knew Pat was trying to get it back on the pond so thought it would be nice to Honour his wish, he built it in 1976 as a Galway Hooker and a few years ago he converted her to another type but was'nt happy with it and was going to strip her back to the Galway Hooker again, while he was in Hospital i used to talk to him about it and he explained what needed doing, I will start a new thread on the renovation of her, his Family also gave me a Fibre Glass hull of a Bristol Channel Pilot boat, but I will leave this one for later on, Pat's last model was a Chinese Junk but he never got around to making a case for it so I offered to make it and am in the process of doing so at the moment, thanks for listening, I will post a couple of pics now,

Two Pics of the Fibre Glass hull of the Pilot Boat, from memory she is 50 inches long and 14 inches wide, will be a big model,

Thank you once again for all the nice comments and likes, I'm sure Pat is up there smiling as he looks down,

Best regards John,

Pat's last model sitting on a bed of slate that he used for the sea, the wood surround was made by Pat,

1.jpg
Luckily the model wasn't glued to the base so I could remove it, made making the case easier,

7.jpg
I made a surround which will be stained to match what Pat around his sea, there is a chip off one corner that I will make good with some plasticene when I attach the Junk,

8.jpg
another view,

I made up a Contraption that I fix in the milling machine vice and I can then use it like a Router,

3.jpg
another view, the screw bolts are there if I need to lock a piece in place then i can wind the piece with the milling table screws, but for these pieces I just ran them along like a router but you have to take small amounts off at a time, If you try to go too deep you cannot control the wood strip, I cut all the strip wood that i needed and some spare and routered it all at the same time,

another view,

some of the routered strips,

and gluing together the corner pieces,

More to come,

best regards John.

The top of the case after two coats of varnish,

12.jpg
This is all the parts for the case,

13.jpg
and a close up, the corner pieces at the front, the slate sea base behind and at the back the bottom surround for the case,

14.jpg
erecting the case, thats the back glass and the two end pieces of glass siliconed in place,

15.jpg
This is the very bottom piece that the slate sea bed will be attached to, I've painted a black surround so that when the case is lifted off the base it will still look neat and tidy, I've mitered the moulding to fit the base but it is not glued in place yet,

16.jpg
how it will look when everything is attached, I still have to varnish the moulding to match the upper case, and there will be four small wooden supports that go under the base,

close up view,

thanks for looking in,

best regards John,
