K63 HMS Picotee 1941 1/48 scale early short forecastle Flower Class Corvette

I was so pleased to finish making Picotee's 'Jackob's Ladder',(all fifty one rungs), that I have some photos to show. The rope ladder has still to be attached to the mast, which itself is still to be finished and is just sitting in place so if it all looks askew ,that's my excuse.

That’s becoming a very nicely and detailed mast, Jack. Especially the loosely hung electrical cables are nice and realistic.

It has taken me a dog's age to work out and make the back stay fittings. and although I have made the bottle screws to the correct scale size they look to big to my eye. I finished the first back stay and tried it for size. It looks ok but in close up the workmanship could be a lot better, it might not make the cut but I will finish the rest first. I coloured the 2.5" 'cable' a bit and quite like it. All the brass and the serviced section will be painted to look as if tared.
Interestingly I have been using the photographs of HMS HELIOTROPE taken just days before she was handed over to the US Navy and renamed USS SURPRISE PG-63, as reference and when you look at the slip hooks on Heliotrope they are all fitted upside down. Of course I am no expert but it looks to me that fitted that way the only thing stopping them flying open is a 1/4 inch steel pin used to lock the securing ring. The pics show Heliotrope just after she was in dry dock and newly painted including the mast. Some mischief by the yard workers? surely not?

The slip hook is showing bottom left corner in above pic. if the retaining ring drops the hook will fly open.

I'm sometimes confused, as I think I'm looking at a real ship. Exceptional detail. Well done indeed!
Thank you Marco, it all seems to be coming together quit nicely. I started building last July and hope to have all done and dusted by this July. But you know what they say; 'If you want to make God laugh tell him your plans'.

Cheers JJ..

Hi my friends. I discovered that there is a second ladder to the front of the mast It is used to let the lookout climb up out of the way to let the next man to slip in. I hadn't seen this ladder in any of the plans but you can see it clearly in many of the photographs so I have added it. So, with the stays added, that is as far as I can go with the mast for a while.
I have started on the forecastle so hope I don't get washed overboard! I started with the four inch gun's band stand the last major bit of construction. I need to make first before I can add the rest of the forecastle bit and pieces. Make first add last.

Some pics.

A quick update regarding the ship's boats. After a lot of fiddling about I have the starboard boat fitted. At first I was going to add lots of the sort of bits and pieces you see stored in the boats, but the wee boats, (they where only sixteen feet long),looked too crowded so rather than over-egging the pudding I settled for just the six oars. The davits are white metal that I have added some sheaves and cleats along with the supports for the griping spar and associated blocks. Looking at the pics. I am not to happy with the rope reel and will tidy them up a bit.

Another fine example of your craftsmanship. And the little boats will be an eye catcher. That’s the problem with this level of detail and finesse: drop the ball once and that will be the part that your eye stops on roaming.

“Over-egging the pudding” … another one for my vocabulary. Nice expression.
