Thanks for your concern guys! The retinal specialist's daughter is my patient so I trust I received his best effort during my surgery this morning ROTF. If not, I have a spare...

It will likely be a few months before everything is settled. But I've been working with only one eye for almost two weeks now so I expect to continue in that same way.

I found another picture that I never posted (hawse hole lining with lead):

Good morning Paul. Good luck with the op- I’m sure it will all be spot on. The old saying ….in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king…..well that doesn’t apply to Dr Kattner. One eye or two, you produce unbelievable work Paul. Cheers Grant

Hello Friends,

I've been having a problem with one of my eyes (retinal bleed) and I went in today for some treatment and now I can hardly see at all (temporary). Of course that means I can't work on my ship.

But I couldn't sleep last night (anxious about my procedure) so I ended up in the Kattner Shipyard installing gudgeons and the rudder before my eye appointment. Here is the result (all accomplished with only one functioning eye  :)).

I can't wait until I can see clearly again to learn how it all turned out ROTF. Thanks for the visit!
If those are results with only one eye, I don't know what to expect when you'll have both. Truly master work.
Hope you'll recover to full health soon my friend

I love the pictures of yoour stern (especially the first one). It will be really nice if you will send it to me in high resolution, that I can put it on my workbench as motivation.
I wish you good luck with your surgery and a speed recovery.
I'll send it to your personal email later today (at my paying job this morning freaking out my staff/patients with what my eye looks like...).

As prompted by friends on the forum I have added some details to the well house (bolts on the hinges, and nails/treenails on the boards):

Yes, the bolts on the hinges are not straight - but since I had to do these freehand (having neglected to include them originally) this was the best I could do.

I am still uncertain if I should be adding 'fasteners' on these build-out elements (there are a lot of walls and such to be added). I struggled adding these nails to the well house (they are 0.40 mm drilled holes filled with wood filler). I can't make wooden pegs small enough. But I wanted to at least try something.

Your thoughts?
Dear Paul, since I my skill has not progressed beyond using stone-age cutting tools I share the following: you are making something rare and wonderful. Whatever inspires your artists heart is what you should do.

And, as usual, a request for knowledge: How did you make the bolt heads please?

Blessings. Peace. Gratitude.
Chuck

Next, I needed to drill holes for the bolts that would hold the straps to the rudder and the hull. To that end I made a little jig:

I then used epoxy to add the pins to the pintles (I could have soldered these pins but that would have required a lower melting temperature solder (than I had used previously) and I doubted I could pull that off):

That done, I burnished/blackened the parts and completed the rudder side of the transaction:

And just in case you think this was a linear experience...I learned that brass can melt...and that it's possible to solder the pins you are using to hold pieces into place onto (inside) the parts you are soldering...

I feel blessed that you would visit on occasion!
Paul, thank you for giving me awe this morning!

We are praying for your complete recovery at Shangri-La, Paul. BTW - The Lovely Renee loves your work too ;)

Thank you for your very kind comments, Chuck.

I made most of the bolt heads using brass wire and a concave cone bur (Busch). But you can also find micro rivets (round heads) or micro bolts/nails (flat heads) on the internet in a variety of sizes. They tend to be a bit spendy...especially the really small ones.

 Dear Paul
Sorry to hear about your retinal problem.
I hope the treatment went well and wish you a quick and full recovery.
you are doing wonderful work even with one eye

See. Told you. Me stone age. You future. As soon as I stop using construction paper and glue, I'll get some brass try some soldering and get a concave bur :p

Good luck with the recovery for retina surgery! I had a detached retina in my early 30's. Fist sized (at arms length) black spot...very weird.

30 years later, all is perfect. I have the normal 60+ need for readers at close distance but no other issues.

Eyesight is a precious thing...hoping you have a quick and full recovery, so we can follow your awesome Kingfisher build!

Regards,
Brad

Hi Brad (@BradNSW),

Thanks for your note. Yes, I describe the visual obstruction as a spiral galaxy in grays and blacks - probably blocks out 1/3 of my vision. And then on top of that everything else looks like I am peering through frosted glass. Apparently this was my dominant eye so I had a screaming headache for about a week until my brain figured out that using that eye was useless. Much happier now. I'm delighted to learn of your long-term success and I will hope for the same. They told me months before I could expect to see clearly - was that your experience?

Paul,
I sent a PM with many details of my experience. You got this!
