Fellow shipmates, I am pleased to present my just arrived Le Requin Zebec and open up this new build log, inviting all to come aboard for the journey. This is the largest and heaviest ship model I have attempted yet. The shipping weight is 20lbs. the box is 34x10x7 inches. The ZHL company did a fantastic job of packing, there were multiple layers of bubble wrap, and nothing appeared to be broken. There are 4 plastic bound manuals and 4ea. 1:1 large sheets of instructions (all Chinese) but I have a good Google translator on my phone. The following pics will give you a good idea of what's in the box.

Wikipedia explains the Zebecs were generally faster and cheaper to build than the square riggers and as such were favored by pirates. Their range apparently were mostly found in the Mediterranean. The Spanish Navy had 6 flavors of Zebec's while the French Navy had 4. Of the 4 types of French Zebecs, the Le Requin is the one I am going to build. Check it out.

I really didn't want to undo the wood in the bottom of the box at this time, most of it is the jig for the framework.

I have ordered a monograph on the Zebec at 1:48 from Ancre which I believe will be of great help in its construction. The monograph includes an excellent line graph drawing of the hull which I plan on porting over to my CAD program and build a 3D model of at least the hull.

Hope to see you all as I get started here in the coming days.

Looks like your ready for a new year long project on this one.

I like the small parts shrunk wrapped to cardstock with numbers to clearly identify them.
Hello Kurt, yes, the numbered system works great. My Bluenose ship had the same format so fortunately I am familiar with it. I wouldn't be surprised if this build takes me 24 to 30 months.

Hi Daniel
Congratulations on your Xebec. I have the same model in my stash; I hope to build it sometime in my lifetime !!!
I also have the Ancre 1:48 monograph. In addition to a full set of plans (22 plan sheets at 1:48 and 1 sheet at 1:72), the edition I have has the original French booklet by Boudroit plus a more concise English translation. The plans are superb.
I will watch your build with great interest.

Good morning, Daniel, a very nice ship. I'll definitely be in the game. I don't know anyone who isn't enthusiastic about the kit. But be careful: the stern, or rather the extension with the grilles, isn't right. The original Ancre plans wouldn't help you here, as they aren't correct either. I wish you lots of fun and success.

Good morning Daniel,

A very nice ship,
After your excursion in plastic, I can imagine that you will go back to a wooden model
And what kind of model, Wow
The bent in wood somewhat more flexible, with your own adjustments
I think you have a technical background that you can handle CAD to generate a 3D model there
If you want you have to show something there when you are ready, I think there is also a lot of interest in that on SOS

Regards Henk

Hi Daniel,
I am not sure if you have seen my post - I just abandoned this build and want to give you some encouragement to avoid my mistakes. Whatever you do secure the keel to the build board. My keel warped during the framing process due to the laminated keel and the force of the rubber bands. I noticed the keel began pulling away while securing the frames and by the time I added the internal stringers it was too late.

Also my keel parts did not match the Chinese plans but were closer to the Ancre ones. There are significant differences between them so you will need to improvise. It is a great kit and I wish you the best success in building her !

Welcome aboard Tobias, I have heard the stern grill extension isn't correct, I will be researching to find the correct configuration if one exists. I assume the data must be somewhere or how else would one know the kit isn't correct.

Good morning Daniel,

A very nice ship, Le Requin,

After your excursion in plastic, I can imagine that you will go back to a wooden model

And what kind of model, Wow

For Chinese manuals and removing wood soot I also see no problem in

The bent in wood somewhat more flexible, with your own adjustments

Lately read a lot here and learned a lot from other builders

Also now again

I did not know the Acre site yet, and I just visited it
(never too old to learn haha)

I think you have a technical background that you can handle CAD to generate a 3D model there

If you want you have to show something there when you are ready, I think there is also a lot of interest in that on SOS

I will follow you

Hi Henk, so glad to have you on board. I am looking forward to the 3D CAD portion of this build, I can use it to fill in from time to time and will definitely post photos maybe even PDF's for downloading especially if I have success with the stern grill extension revisions.

Dear CLB, I am sorry to hear you have abandoned your build. I hope that you would check in on mine from time to time with any pointers you think I could use. I am aware of others who have had the problem with the keel wanting to warp in the jig and this is worrisome for me, so I plan to keep a sharp eye on this problem and try to avoid it. I appreciate the heads up you're giving me.

Wow, such graceful lines in this ship!

Now I see how so many here end up with quite a "stash"! I have the Andrea Gail 1:30 on order at this very moment and have plans to get two from Pavel Nikitin (San Bartolome and Santa Maria). It appears my tastes are going for ships that aren't "ships of the line" at the moment. I'm sort of looking for a "theme" since I no longer have 30 years to build.
