Good afternoon, all, I decided to take a break from the ever-exciting world of sanding ribs over and over. I looked at the main mast bottom preparation, they call for a 90mm section to be shaped octagonally then transition into its 15mm round shape. All at the same time they call for outside diameter to remain constant in the octagon section which cannot happen as they drew it. Each vertex must occur slightly outside the radius, or one must cut into the mast to make the flat sides thus reducing the original diameter.

So, my solution was to create a faceted jacket glued to the dowel and trimed to fit. Yes, it will be slightly larger going through the deck, but I'll make it fit.
After scribing the layout on the dowel, I needed a proof of method so I made 8 pieces about an inch long to glue on and check the mate up. Youll see this first attempt I came up about 1.5mm too short.

The first strips I used were 5.5mm wide so I found some at 6mm wide and here is the result.

Second time worked great, after a little filler at the joints and final finish it should look fine. This type of work is really enjoyable, now back to the sanding dungeon.

I'm getting close to a milestone here, all heavy char has been removed from the frames, still a lot of finish sanding to go. In my last post I mentioned the little triangular tabs sticking out of every eleventh frame and I decided to map them out so I could grind them off making internal fairing so much easier. My method of using masking tape should allow me to map the original location back to the frames. Check it out.

There is still quite a bit of mottled coloration on the installed frames which I intend to sand out during the fairing process. The pieces on the table still need a lot of sanding prep before I glue them into place.

Hello all, I was able to carve out the octagon nipple shape into the butt of the main mast. This had to fit the kit supplied mast step and after a couple hours here it is. The Step will fit onto the keelson once I install it. By the way only eight ribs left to install.

Hello all, I was able to carve out the octagon nipple shape into the butt of the main mast. This had to fit the kit supplied mast step and after a couple hours here it is. The Step will fit onto the keelson once I install it. By the way only eight ribs left to install.

I was going to say that was a lot of work for something you can't see - but then I remembered that about 80% of my Kingfisher build has suffered the same fate ROTF. We are an odd lot...

Good evening Daniel. A perfect fit. The octagon lower mast also came out really nicely - a clever way to keep the circumference the same while changing a dowel to an octagon. Cheers Grant
