Letter Perfect

Try using a backing board for the letters. It is a decorative board upon which the ship’s name is inscribed or mounted. The board can be, for example, white on the black stern with the letters outlined in black to pop out from the backing board. In this case the letters can take on a number of contrasting color options. More ideas to stir the pot! :)

I’ve heard of a backing board but have no idea where to get it. Art supply store?

In this case it is a name for a piece of planking that is shaped a bit, painted the colour you want (most are white), then the letters for the ship's name are spaced and glued onto the plank, and then the assembly is glued to the stern. Using scrap wood from your kit, cut a piece of strip wood that is a bit wider than your letter are tall and longer than the name as laid out. If you do not have a wide enough piece then glue two pieces edge to edge to get the height you need for your letters. Round and shape the edges to help it look a bit fancy. Glue the name onto the plank. Mount the plank to the stern. In this case the "plank" is called a "backing board" for the ship's name.
