hello all
When I was a teen, I built the Constitution and the Cutty Sark from plastic kits and now in retirement after reading "in the heart of the sea" I'm going to live my dream and build a ship from wood. the Essex seems like a good choice, everything I ordered should be here by the end of the week and I just can't wait to start.
Mike
p.s. this looks like a great website!

Welcome to the forum!

Which Essex kit are you going to build? The whaler, I guess. :D
(There are a few different ships by that name and different manufacturers. )

I hope you will post a build log. It’s a good way to become known here and make friends as well as a useful source of help and advice when needed.

Hi Smithy, thanks for response
yes, the Whaler by Occre. I think with the YouTube videos I should be ok,
I have a lot to learn and yeah, a building log sounds good

A warm welcome to you Budda. Don't be afraid to ask questions during your journey. As you have never built a wooden ship model you may want to consider setting your Essex aside for a few weeks and build one or more of the high quality three boats designed by David Antscherl available at
These will allow you to learn good habits on proper building techniques with better quality materials.

I would agree with Alan as an additional path to help you on your ship building adventure.
The Shipwright series are specifically designed to get you started along the right path in building.

Welcome to the asylum ;) Be careful this is very deep hole, take it from someone who knows !

also from my side a warm welcome here on board of our forum

Welcome and I think you should start with Essex and skip those dory kits. The risk is great that you find them so boring that you lose your appetite. You want to build a ¨real¨ boat, not a dinghy.
Start a build log and you will get a lot of advice here.
The advantage of wooden construction is that all mistakes can be fixed, just make new parts. And it's a cheap hobby too, calculated per hour.

Welcome, and where is USA do you hail from, we have members all about, and if you let us know, someone may be near you to provide advise or assistance.

Please start a build log on your ship when you start so we can follow along and provide assistance if you have questions or issues.

Use the search tool to see if anyone else has posted on the ship kit and see what they have done. It often saves you time if you have same issues.

I really do appreaciate everyones warm welcome and thoughtful advice. I've been wanting to build a wooden ship for so long its like its become an obsession. OcOre lists the Essex as medium difficulty, there's you tube vids, at least one build blog on SOS which looks great ! I'm pretty handy and I have you guys ! so, as David Glasgow Farragut once said Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead

Hi Mike,

I'm sure you will like the OcOre Essex. The second ship I built was the OcOre Endurance. The kit went together without any problems (that I didn't create) and the videos do help a lot.
