The shields. As mentioned earlier, there is a lot of variation in shape and width.
Some of the shields on the starboard side were still in place during the salvage. Those shields are therefore being installed first. The rest will be free-style.
Above one of the semi-circular gunports, there was even an opening.
The small holes were most likely for tying the shields to the top rail with rope. Here and there, holes still need to be drilled at the top to secure the anti-boarding net with ropes.
To work somewhat more easily and quickly, the slots are being milled out.
