Masking tape

Are you looking to make a nice clean line along the hull or just cover up things? If the former, any good painter's tape will work, but it is difficult to edge bend in a nice curve. Automotive pinstriping is good to use for the fine curve then masking tape on top so it lands somewhere on the pinstriping tape. Either way, once the tape is down, seal the edge with a clear coat first. Once dry it will keep the paint that is to follow from bleeding under the tape if the tape is not perfectly sealed to the wood.

Hiya guys can anyone recommend a masking to use for painting the ships hull
Look for masking liquid.

Paint it on and it seals to the base with no possibility of seepage. You can embed a paper strip if you are intending to spray, so that your line is carefully defined, and carrying a sort of 'fringe' of paper - or masking tape if you wish, but tape is often tricky to curve so you need that accuracy in the masking.
Also possible to run a scalpel along the intended line and pick off the unwanted 'errors'

It all depends on what it is that you need to paint onto

I use Tamiya tape (yellow tape) to mask off the line to be painted and blue painters masking tape for the larger areas. Tamiya tape is thinner and has a smooth edge to give a sharp line. I haven't had any issues with paint bleeding.

I always used Scotch Drafting tape. I had a long piece of glass, Which I cleaned with alcohol before use. Then, I put a length of tape on the glass and Using a straightedge and a sharp Exacto #1 blade, cut strips of tape. Discard the outer edge of the tape. Apply the tape , and use a wood burnisher to seal the edge. I never had any problems.

Check Amazon for model masking tape. You can find widths down to 1mm for making smooth curves and against delicate PE parts as on my model of the USS Yorktown. I mostly use Tamiya 1/2” tape but sometimes back it up with blue painters tape to mask larger areas with the model tape against the model. 1740849693776.jpeg

Also, be gentle with the paint--brush from the tape to the surface you are painting and don't flow it on.

Hi John, I use the green Frog tape … it leaves a very clean line and is not so tacky as to pull wood off the model when removed.

Not long ago I bought the 3mm x 18m Vallejo masking tape which, together with the classic masking tape, allowed me to make a "decent" waterline of a plastic German submarine from the Second World War.

Vallejo tape is very good because it sticks sufficiently to the surface, it can be curved slightly and it does not lift the paint it is on when peeled off or leave traces of glue.

If you need to use or make camouflages with random curves, you can also use a type of very manageable plastic putty that can also be used to cover empty spaces between pieces and gaps and is very easy to remove.

I leave images of the masking tape and plastic putty and two links of the use of plastic putty.
