Sevish I have your build log bookmarked for quick reference. I purchased the kit several months ago when OcCre had a sale. I am currently 16 months into my OcCre Amerigo Vespucci (my build log is in the SOS Forums) and still have several ahead of me before completed. Once my AV is done I will eager to crack open the Montanes. I hope you won’t mind to much if I from time to time pick your brain about your build. I will be particularly interested in upgrades you decided to do and parts (blocks, thread, etc) you decided to purchase. I did similar with my AV. The larger scale of the Montanes will require a bit more study to determine scale sizes of after market items. Hopefully I can find most of the information I will need reading your blog but if I hit a road block I may ask you a question. Appreciate in advance help you may give me.

Guy back in the 3rd page build, I think comment 43, you report “the mail came today”. In that post you show photos of the different rigging items you purchased (blocks, deadeyes, etc). I am planning to do the same for my Montanes build. May I ask how you determined the amount of each item to purchase?

Hi Bill,
In the instruction you have the total amount of every blocks and deadeyes that supplied with the kit.
Those are the amounts also take the notes that i wrote in privet and add them as well.
If you planing to use only long guns calculate as necessary you will need 4-single blocks and two double blocks for each gun if I remember correctly.

Thanks again Guy. I have not open the kit yet to peek at the supplies. These you show are like the ones OcCre supplied with the Amerigo Vespucci. The blocks are 4mm single and double. I thought I saw in your supply photos that you purchased various size blocks.

Montañés may be a bit different but for English ships, the block sizes are determined by the size of the rope. The sizes of all the ropes are all related to the circumference of the lower stays which were 1/2 the diameter of the appropriate lower masts. There are Excel charts mentioned here at SoS that will help or can be found in James Lees' The Masting and Rigging book.
Again, Montañés may have been different, but guns under 32 pounders had only single blocks on English ships (Caruana, The History of English Sea Ordnance, page 386.) It is a lot easier using only singles for the model. As Montañés had 36 pounders these would surely have a double and single for both the train tackle and running out tackle but smaller calibers probably did not. If this is of any importance to you, maybe check with the Museo Naval in Madrid.

For me currently it doesn't matter anymore as o finished the ship and delivered her to my costumer.
But thanks for the info , i will check it out with the Santa Anna if i will start to build it.
Yes I remember all of the detail work of those bulkhead hatches and etc. that will NEVER be seen, except by the model maker. Here is my work on the same bulkheads, I choose not to paint them.. Great job so far, good decision on upgrading all of the blocks, I have also boughtt many blocks of diiferent sizes and etc to use if I do not like the parts that are included in the kit.
Thanks Guy, and Charles and Allan. That is where my curiosity ran. I am going to purchase the higher quality blocks but was curious about amounts of each size. Guy I see now you used 4mm for everywhere except the guns. On my HMS Victory the reference books I have recommended different sizes based on the size of the ropes as you said Allan. If I am purchasing new blocks for my Montanes I figure I might as well get the sizes to scale of what might be authentic. Just not sure of quantity and sizes of each. Will definitely purchase the two different deadeye sizes. Will probably refer to spread sheet for other block sizes. I have a spreadsheet for the HMS Victory. I may just use it even though it is a British ship compared to Montanes being Spanish.

Pay attention that OCCRE supply only 3 sizes of ropes 0.15,0.5,0.8
The Rigging schemes they made are for British ships , there were some differences between British and Spanish ships rigging.
If you want to go with that way you will have to do some more research about quantities of the desired blocks and amount. Don't forget that you wil also need triple blocks and maybe also violin blocks .
