Workshops My shipyard/your shipyard

My work spaces aren't as pretty as yours are, they are dusty, cluttered and efficient. I have three main work stations, one for each type of work: small, medium, large. The work I do in each comes together in the main space, the bench. You will notice a few other models laying about in various stages of completion and even a couple sent to me for completion or restoration. You will also notice many of the other types of carvings that I do laying about, including a group of sailors, seamen, fishermen, officers, etc., that I did while visiting my wife in hospital lately, I hate to sit idle and carve while waiting. Enjoy and ask questions if you see something you don't understand. Also included is a pic of my wood storage area, where I can cut my own wood strips from large boards, plane and sand them to usable strips, what ever the species.

Moxis, nice workshop indoor you have, I have to do the worst dusty work in my garage and it's cold in the winter.

Bob, it seems like you have full control in your workshoop and enjoy yourself, the most important thing is that we enjoy ourselves with what we are doing.

Good luck to both of you !.

Now that is what I call a work shop.

Denis.

Hi Jim, The cans and bottles on the floor are paints that I had to mix to achieve the correct colour, mostly for birds that I have carved. Birds have extrodinary colours and seldom can be achieved by purchasing it off the store shelf, so I have to mix some.
...not to mention it is a great bending exercise... hope you take it as a joke, I am just kidding around. I really like your wood selection. What kind of species you have in your stash?

I ended up needing more room so I gave the wife my Den to do her sewing and crafts in and I moved my shipyard to an upstairs bedroom that has been empty for 6 years since My daughter moved out. I still need to paint the walls and remove the carpet, but that will have to wait for spring when I can open the windows as I hate new paint smell. this is what I have in the room so far. I want to get another work bench to build my ships on it will give me all the room I need for the ship and materials. I still have my 3D printer laser cutter/engraver to move into the room and I will be getting a spindle drive type engraver for making ship decorations. so I plan on using the current bench for tool storage and will bring them to the top when needed and store them below when I don't. I also have a mini metal lathe and Milling machine but I don't think I will bring those into the room they are on a work bench in the basement and Id prefer to use those down there. And Just an FYI the cigarette butt in the ashtray is my sons who helped me build the bench and bring the tools from my den. He has been moved out for several years now as well, but always willing to come help me when I need it. I will be putting in a central vac system eventually to hook tools up to I hate dust and my wife will murder me in my sleep if I dust everything over. for now I'm using a shop vac. Id love to have 2 more of the benches pictured but I don't want to jam all that into the room so 1 more will be good enough

Newest addition bought the 3018 pro upgraded cnc router got it assembled and ran some test pieces, I'm pretty impressed. Ran text and it was super clean. Going to Tram the table today I also started 3D printing a cable chain, box for controller with a fan in it. Will be adding limit stitches to all axis so I need to make brackets for those on the printer. Maybe i will make a vacuum system for it as well. I printed 2 collet wrenches for the ER11 collet system and I bought all the collet sizes so I can put on just about any cutters up to 1/4" I did also buy the 5.5W laser for it, that will come in handy for small work so I dont have to do tiny things in my K40 laser machine.

The only thing that I didn't like with the router is is came with non lubed bearings good thing I have lube I use a product called sil-glyde on the bearings guide rods and lead screws. I will be upgrading the control system to Mach3 and a 500W spindle that should be plenty of power for hardwood. 20190222_094146.jpg20190222_094154.jpg

What can you make with this exciting machine, maybe you show it in work?
This can be used to make some decorative carvings for ships. I can use it to cut out ship parts like Blocks and fittings also. I will be using it to make Blocks and decorations for a Scratch Build of the Constellation. I made some blocks on the lathe and it wasn't much fun this router will make that job simple. I will definitely make a video of it doing its thing.

Which 3D CAD program are you using with your router.
I'm using Sketch up, tinker cad, and now Fusion 360 I found a good book that helped with the learning curve in Fusion. I'm running the Machine on the software provided which is Arduino based Which I'm extremely familiar with because I am a Programmer as a hobby the name for it is called Grblcontrol (Candle). I also have Mach3 to run on and I have Easel and Inkscape.. for the laser Ill run elekcam 3.1 and GRBL laser. I like having options to run the unit on and options to design and editing. I will pic the best of the bunch to use mainly but keep the others just incase something gets updated and I no longer like the software. The Machine runs on G-code so I had to download converters for files like Jpg, Bmp, STL and such to G-Code format I was once pretty good with G-code but I haven't done a lot with it in a bunch of years because now things like 3D printers work on STL, DXF and such most programs for 3D can export in that format.

G'day Joe
I love your new toy! I'm tossing up to get one as well or a 3D printer.......hmmm choices.
Depends on what you want to do Brother the Router could make 3D objects with a 4th axis or you could Mirror a design and glue the 2 halves together for a 3D look. All in all a 3D printer is more useful, but when its got to be make from wood the router is the tool for the job.

Hi Joe, Excellent addition to your tools chest. Can you tell what is the model number or any links for those machines? I would love to get more information about 3D routers. Is it comes with software, or you have to buy software yourself? Any information I would much appreciate.

Sure can Brother I bought the router from Amazon I bought the one with the best warranty and customer support I also added a 2 year warranty through amazon just to be safe. I bought the 3018 Pro model a with upgrade The upgrade is the controller board and the offline controller from everything I have read about these machines. this frame is also better then the all t slot frame 3018 offering. The laser I bought from Sainsmart because it was made for my router perfectly without a ton of grief to get it operational. Everything you need is in the box all drivers and software are on a CD but the software is also posted on the internet since this uses an Arduino based system and chip this is an open source controller that also means a massive community backing the control hardware and software. Because its open source there are many software programs that interact with it such as Inkscape. Candle, Easel, Fusion 360, autocad, and a host of others this makes finding a friendly software much easier. The system comes with GrblControl which is Candle a very easy software to get good at. so really no need to use anything else until your familiar with CNC. the laser software is also included on the disc and is on the net. One thing is this system runs on G Code so being familiar with how this code runs CNC is a Plus. easy enough to go learn it online for free I did that many years ago when I was learning to Program Microchips learned it all on the net over a winter which Made one of my buddies very upset since he spent 4 years in college to learn it lol
Here are the links to what I bought I did have one issue during assembly the table used t nut and screws to secure it to the guides which ride on the rails the screws provided were to short they were M5X10 and needed to be M5X16 like the rest of the screws I have a large bolt bin at work so wasn't an issue for me. I sent an email to the seller just to see how good customer service was they responded within 24 hours telling me to buy the hardware needed and they would reimburse me $25 for it. they were surprised when I told them no need I got the bolts free. But I thanked them for the offer. the unit uses Bakelite and aluminum for the frame and its super strong I did use blue loc tite on all the screws running into metal just to be safe.
Here are the Links one thing if you get the laser get a better set of goggles I already had a good set I use for me 50W laser but the ones provided while ok are just not good quality I don't skimp when it comes to my eyes so I have a pair of goggles that are $120
