New model room

Here’s an idea I didn’t see mentioned. I got an Uplift Desk frame and used commercially available butcher block top for the top which made the table top 30” x 72”. The versatility of being able to raise and lower the work surface to fit what I’m working on is priceless. Lower the table to my knees to work on rigging or inside POF hulls and raise it up to work on outside the hull or finicky bits without having to hunch over the parts.
I too have an uplift desk that is 30 x 72 except with a laminated white top that one can use erasable markers on. Also have the table attached top light with different modes of light. Great to lower for rigging and deck work. Plenty of room for any additional desk workstations and ships.

This is a suggestion I want to follow up on.

I went another route for a workshop. I was using a spare bedroom in the house but turned that into my computer and fly tying room so model building had to be somewhere else. And since I have a 3-car garage I use for woodworking, I moved a roll-top desk out there and it is my primary model building station. I have a lot of built-in stuff and added a Lennox garage heater to give me year round access. ( It gets COLD here in Idaho). I also added a motorcycle lift to let me adjust working height for my builds. Busy but fun for me!20241207_144756.jpg20241207_144732.jpg20240106_074958.jpg20230125_121520.jpg20200401_115313.jpg20200401_115229.jpg20200401_115201.jpg

Now THAT'S A MODEL SHOP

Mark,

Re; your post #36 above, a couple of comments. From a strictly ship modeling standpoint, your workshop will depend on the kind of models that you intend to build. Scratch building will create much more dust, shavings, etc than kit building.

I do have a table away from the walls of my shop. My present ship modeling project is rigidly fixed to it. It is important that both the table and model be level. (Make sure that your contractor carefully levels your shop floor) The table is made using metal legs for a power tool stand. The top can be made from any sheet stock as long as it’s flat. I’m not bashful about drilling holes in the top as they are easily plugged later. I do not worry about dust control for work done at the table as I make subassemblies on my workbench and fit to them to the model on the table.

Finally, my planer can quickly create a wheelbarrow full of dust and shavings. It is, therefore, on a separate stand so that it can be wheeled outdoors.

Since you're building your own work table(s) it doesn't have to be rectangular. A u-shaped table, where you sit in the opening, gives you three separate areas you can reach by just swiveling your seat.

I hadn't thought about that. I'll check it out.

I think a white with some speckle on it. the walls are s ahede of white with Plenyu of daylight. Hardfloors not carpeting. I'll get a larger cutting mat. Focus ;ighting will be fun.
the speckles will help the gremlins hide your tiny pieces lol
