When Vasa was raised in 1961, a lost world was revealed in astonishing detail. Among the most remarkable finds were the remains of the rigging. Normally shipwrecks offer only a few clues to the structure above the waterline, but on Vasa the lower masts, a myriad of blocks and deadeyes, hundreds of meters of rope and cable and – most astonishingly – nine sails from the ship and its boat survive. The unique finds provide an unparalleled opportunity to reconstruct the rigging in detail and to form an understanding of how ships were sailed in the seventeenth century. With a sail plan, rigging, and steering gear that are substantially different to the classical full-rigged ship of the nineteenth century, the evidence from Vasa paints a vivid picture of ship-handling in the Age of Sail. Vasa II Part 1 presents more than a thousand finds of wood, metal, and cloth from the most complete rig to survive from before 1800, which form the basis for a complete reconstruction of the rig and sailing performance of a large warship of the 1620s.

At long last, Volume III of the Rogers Collection is in its final production stages! This book is the third in a series of four volumes devoted to the “dockyard” ship models in the renowned Rogers Collection at the United States Naval Academy Museum. These precious relics from the Age of Sail came to the Academy in 1938 as part of a bequest from Colonel Henry Huddleston Rogers, “The Millionaire Colonel” who fought on the Western Front in World War I even though he was one of the wealthiest men in America and could easily have shirked his duty.
Volumes I & II examined seventeen examples of First, Second, and Third Rates that comprise Colonel Rogers’ models of ships of the line, meaning those ships that were big and powerful enough to fight in the line of battle in fleet or squadron engagements.
Volume III addresses the models that represent the other kind of Royal Navy ships in the Age of Sail, the cruisers and convoy escorts of the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Rates. Whether by luck or design, Rogers managed to find and purchase almost the same number of cruiser models – eighteen – as his seventeen miniature ships of the line. Eight represent Fourth Rates, six represent Fifth Rates, and four represent Sixth Rates. All originated in England and represent English or British warships.

I should have a more specific delivery date soon, but it is looking like the end of April for delivery to the warehouse and then we'll ship your order from there.

Ab Hoving and his son Emiel are back with another beautifully designed book about 17th century Dutch ship modeling, but this time using paper as the primary building medium!
In this introduction to scratch building ship models in paper, Ab provides detailed overviews for building a "smalschip" and a Pinas based on Nicolaes Witsen's 17th century work. He also provides thoughts and tips for other merchantmen and men of war. The book includes plans that can be used to build your own paper models following Ab's commentary and Emiel's photos and illustrations.
If you've never tried your hand at building a paper model or thought the pre-printed paper "kits" never looked great, this is the book for you. And it's a perfect companion to Ab's other books on Dutch shipbuilding and modeling.
