Newbie to SOS forum

Hi All,
my name is Roger from the UK. I am completely new to wooden ship modeling at the grand old age of 60 and have purchased the Billings "Mary Jeanne" and the Occre "Aurora Brig 1:65". I have watched countless videos on you tube and I am completely hooked. Your forum is just fantastic the expertise of you all is amazing. I will be starting the Mary Jeanne as my first attempt into the realms of wooden ships and will making my way through the areas of the forum getting tips from them. I am a complete novice so getting to the learn the nautical names of parts of the ship and also the techniques of building them will be a challenge for me. I hope it is alright with members of the forum but no doubt I will be asking questions which may seem basic to you all as my build progresses. I look forward to meeting you all on your build logs.

Welcome to SOS from Down Under.

I suggest you have a look at some build logs and when ready start a build log.

You will find that the forum is very friendly so if you have an issue with your build there will be quite a few Model Ship Builders to help you

Hi Roger and welcome. Two nice looking models you have picked out there; wonder which one you will start first? My advice would be to thoroughly read the instructions and plans for both and then start on the one that is the clearest to you. I say that because I am currently building an Italian kit with poorly translated instructions and no distinct correlation to the plans. Not impossible by any means, but I would not want to have built it as my first wooden model.
Jump in, get started and we all look forward to following your build log - everyone here started somewhere and I am sure all would agree that we are still learning on every new build we do! Regards.

Hi Graham,
Thanks for the welcome. I will probably start with the Mary Jeanne it looks less complicated than the Occre Aurora Brig. Found a good deal a while back from Ebay for the Mary Jeanne for £25 from a hospice auction. The Aurora Brig is a lot more expensive £125 from Cornwall Boat Models. Yes your right study the plans and instructions my first dread in my quest to wooden ship models. The more I look online and also you guys the more I want to get started. But as you expert modelers know she with the greater authority says finish the plastic "Titanic" First :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:. As I said to Geoff I will have to study how to get the photos onto the forum., all in good time eh!.

well, I have been building these ships, (working on my third one) and I can tell you that I still do not know all the nautical terms and techniques. I just takes a while to learn. I think that is what drives me is that I still have a lot of gaps in my knowledge about ships.
