Hello!!
Just retired from 24 years as an Operating Room RN. So I think ship models will fill the void well!
I have four models in the wings. The Lady Nelson, Pickle, Granado, and Fly in that order.

Have attempted ships before and was not happy with the way that went. But have done my research on the right way to start this hobby!
Have been watching a guy on You Tube from Japan building Amati's Granado by the name of Tanaka. That has given me confidence to start again.
Any way should get started soon and thanks in advance for the opportunity to learn from you guys!

He has some really useful information, but you may want to look at other planking tutorials. Several are mentioned here at SoS including those from David Antscherl and Chuck Passaro that will serve you much better when you get to the hull planking.

Welcome aboard. As a new builder myself, I can attest to the fact that I have learned greatly from this forum. The other shipwrights here have helped me by reading my build log and making suggestions plus when I have asked questions. Look forward to watching your builds.

Thank you!

Welcome aboard David! Your surgical skills, especially knot tying in confined spaces, will come in really handy in this hobby!

Thanks!!
Was heavily into model railroading (scratch building, fine scale structures etc. but won't have that kind of room in the next house.
Model ships I think will still give me the challenges I'm looking for and take care of my love for history too!!

Welcome aboard from Connecticut. Anesthesiologist here, have been in th OR over 35 years, still working part time. I started with wooden ships a few years back after doing plastic models for many years.
I am currently modeling a cross section of the Constitution, but before I did these, I dipped my toe in the waters by building some simpler wood models, and I am very glad I did.

I usually recommend the model expo Shipwright series. A set of 3 increasingly complex boats.

Model Shipways Shipwright Series

This is a great way to learn how to handle the wood, what to do and more importantly what not to do. You can download their building instructions as a PDF if you wish to get an idea. There are also many build logs and you tube videos of this Shipwright series.

That being said, there are many fine folks here that will help you, especially if you start your own build log of your projects!

Hi. My first build was the Amati Lady Nelson. Learned a lot on that build that carried over to more advanced builds. There was also a YouTube video that was very informative and useful. Have fun!
