I couldn’t agreed more with Dockattner.
I will also seat back and relax washing your build log.
A very wise poet said once: “The One who made the ear, can he not hear? The One who formed the eye, can he not see?, He is the One who imparts knowledge to people.
So, the knowledge you need to build, you will find it here.

Good day Richie!
Very interesting additions to your building report!
Thank you Kirill4.
I also found this one was interesting, it seems a reconstruction was built for an exhibition in 1912.

Thank you Bluebeard.

I think for me as much as it is about the physical aspects of the model it's also about can I capture the essence of what it represents given my current skills and knowledge.

This thought came to mind, if you have never ridden a bike before, I can tell you how to ride it and I can show you how to ride it but until you actually get on the bike and try it yourself you wont be able to ride it.
From those initial learnings you find how far you want to take it either for fun, fitness or competitively or anywhere in between, why mention bikes because I can relate to it and have raced them on the road and velodrome.

Good day Richie,
This Revenge reconstruction looks funny in modern sence if I could say that... but this images looks have more tight and close relations with possible appearance of Revenge, how it could be looked like... and your kit gives more close and accurate represantation of elizabethian galleon than this 1912 versionattachment.jpg1.jpgEnglish ships and the Spanish Armada, August 1588.jpgScreenshot_20210726-205008_Gallery.jpg

There we have some local discussions about english and spanish galleons... you could list it trough for watching pictures or use google translator if ness-ry to read topics

Very interesting reading and there certainly is plenty of discussion, google translate seems to work pretty well.

Also had a look at your collected works at rijksstudio museum, that is fascinating and very impressive, didn't realise you were so deeply involved with such quality works, I feel pretty humble right now.

Yes agreed, that particular image is very boxy and perhaps simplified, but very interesting that it was created for an exhibition.

First layer planking continues.

With the lower deck gun ports the original backing plates part b13 seemed a bit on the small side, I was concerned if I hadn't glued them in properly they might push in when drilling the hole for the canon barrels so I used scraps and off-cuts to make some bigger ones.
I spent quite a bit of time working on the alignment of all the side strakes along the gun ports taking into account my error in height between both sides and trying to even everything up a bit, this meant some undos and redos from my first attempt at cutting out the gun ports. I know this will affect the gun port height a little on deck but thought that was the lesser of two weevils. ROTFROTF, if I could get the external first impression to look right and the flow along the sides correct then I would be happy with that.
Once all the planking was completed some wood filler was required to even up parts of the bow and stern.
As I had to manipulate the gun port heights on deck level with some filler pieces I have decided I will plank the inside of the balwarks to cover it up.

Planking Second layer and trouble.

I have a lot of trouble with planking trying to work out the right way to do this so with much uncertainty I decided to follow the Occre video of the Buccaneer build, this uses a similar platform to the Revenge, pretty sure this isn't how real ships would have been done but security in following along I think helped me get through it.

I have read about the different construction methods so I tried a few different ways to see if one worked better for me, one of them was using contact adhesive but it left a bit of a mess to clean up.
I also had to add some extra pieces on top in places where they didn't join very well, definitely a weak area for me so more practice required, not my proudest part of the build so far and hoping touch ups will hide most of my sins.

The gun ports were painted black before the second planking layer but will need touching up as they got scratched while cutting out the second layer, maybe a better way is to cut the planks before attaching to the hull.

Final sanding still to be done.

Everyone has trouble with the final planking you'll be surprised how good it will look when it's finished. I had a look at the video and I wouldn't have done it like that. I can't talk with a lot of experience but I taper the planks as I go and have never used contact adhesive. Unfortunately the only way to learn is with experience, it's only then what you read about makes sense. There are a lot of good posts to help with planking. Small gaps can be filled with sawdust from the planks mixed with PVA glue, experiment first on scrap before trying on your ship.

Thanks for your feedback Tony.
Yes the video way never seemed quite right to me either but I just had to find a way to get it done.
My first build sat in a cupboard for over 20 years as I messed up the second layer of planking as well, if I waited that long on this one I don't think it would get finished, as you say I am now better for the experience, maybe after a dozen or so builds I will get then hang of it. :)
Good idea for the filler but those gaps were a bit bigger, as it was right on the bow curve there was a slight twist in the wood so I don't think it glued properly and broke off while sanding hence new pieces were added.
The instructions actually say to use cobblers glue which I believe is a contact adhesive, hey happy to try anything till I find something that works for me.

A couple of books of ships around the time period give a good overview.

Hi Richie,

...but I have resigned myself to the reality that I can't do what more experienced / talented modelers can do.
Understatement of the Year, Paul....Cautious
My master once said to me, "the best work is not done by the masters, but by the gifted apprentices, because they pour their very soul into the effort." You can't lie to me about your skill level. I've seen your Wasa. ;)
