That is absolutely wonderful !!! I always thought it would have been fun to participate in one of those office contests, my team (Data Center IT) was always to busy to participate. :)
So, are they going to judge them? Yours is terrific and very inventive and imaginative ! of course, I might be a little prejudice. ROTF
Well good news is most of the in office time was just placing it on a table and walking away. Haha the vote is taking place digitally but they are remaining on display for those in the office to have a chance to see them in person. Data center IT is crazy important and impressive so thank you for your efforts :3 I work with a bunch of software engineers who rely on your continued support so thank you.

I did feel a little sheepish, brining the ship in unfinished as it is, but embracing the unfinished aspect has been fun as people have asked "how?" So then I can turn the ship around and be like "this is how" lol

I am also impressed the towels are working well enough to keep it stable with it's single contact point on the wall.

Your build is incredible! I like the way you finished it and used the peeps on the skeleton side. I'm very impressed with what you were able to do. Here's hoping the judges will also be impressed.

Count me in on Rebus' post! I couldn't express it better. What a fun ride! Can't wait to see more. You are already a winner in my book! Thumbsup Thumbsup ;)

Thank you @Rebus and @Peter Gutterman

To be honest I have won the last three competitions at work so I'm ok not winning lol if it becomes too much of a habit they might not do them/people might not participate

Honestly I'm proud of my build and the work I have put into it so far so even if I don't win I feel like a winner ☺️ Its by popular vote so I'd love it if the Peep Floyd or Peep Pony Club won. (Personally rooting for Peep Floyd as they are the only one to give me a run for the win at Halloween so they encourage me to express my creativity more)

And yes between the peeps on the egg "masts" or the peeps in the skeleton side of the ship I don't know what brings me more joy (probably the eating them -- all the dr. Pepper ones are no longer part of the display lol @MisterCA )

I came in third!

I still plan to finish the current build! And a smaller scale one to keep.

I have been feeling creative and decision burn out so took some time off work to nap and hike and watch comedy. I watched my parents dog this weekend and he loves cardboard so I wasn't able to make progress when I felt up to it on Sunday. I did get lots of puppy cuddles between making sure he didn't bring any bugs into the house. I got my strawberry plants repotted so they hopefully don't die

This weekend I'm helping my parents with bottom painting their boat before it goes in the water. As we have a small house I'll probably enjoy the clean living room this week and pick it back up next week.

Congrats on your third place win. :) Puppy cuddles are always important! I get them often.
Enjoy your time off from the build. We all need time to recharge our creative batteries from time to time.

Started cutting stabilizers for the other side to allow me to have something for the glue to stick to when doing the 'planking'.

I am thinking about pulling out my air clay to help with the dent seen kinda front and center. To build out that frame enough that the line is convex instead of concave.

Another option might be to glue ‘stealers’ with the desired profile to either side of the existing bulkhead. Once it t’s covered with planking, no-one’s the wiser.

Ooo what are Stealers?

It seems truly difficult to create a rigid hull from such soft materials, especially for keeping the shape smooth and symmetrical.
I was surprised at how well just some hot glue and cardboard is holding together. I wasn't gentle with it, due to its large size and awkward shape, when bringing it into the office. Hit it on multiple doors and it didn't dent, bend, or deform.

The frame in question though was cut to the wrong shape and I didn't figure that out till it was glued in place so debating if I can live with it or if I should fix it. I didn't know what to look for when I did the other side.

For the symmetry I would cut one half and then use the cutoff as the template for the other side. This did let me fix some line errors. Additionally once they were all cut out I laid them on each other. I don't think I knew what I was looking for at the time though to fix the hull shape.

After sitting on the one side I finished for a few weeks I decided that it really does bother me lol

To help smooth out the shape I think I am going to use some paper mache to make up for some of the cut edges and try to get more of that planking look in. I think it might help with the dry brushing and wet paints to pull out a fake wood texture.

A stealer is a plank inserted between two other planks at a place in the hull where the area to be covered widens, such as at the stern of the hull.

I really admire your jumping in the deep end, foraging ahead with non-traditional materials, creativity and ingenuity. You remind me of me when i was about nine or ten about 70 years ago, undeterred by what I didn't know. Full steam ahead.
Most of all for signing on and reaching out!
You got grit, girl! Thumbsup Thumbsup First Place Metal

I think what Namabiiru meant by this is you could cut out a piece of cardboard like the bulkheads you made, but in the shape you now want the hull cross section to be and glue it to the side of the existing bulkhead. This new piece would stick out to the shape you want the hull to be giving you a new surface to glue the hull planks to.

let me know if this doesn't make sense and I'll create a drawing that might explain it better. :)

Oooo so instead of adding a small shape to the frame, I butt another fame, with the proper shape against the existing oneIMG_20250522_120342171~2.jpg

If needed I can use less in the over lap area and can use the piece on both sides of the frame and as a template for the other side of the ship as well

Brilliant!!!

Sorry, I was using construction terminology, rather than traditional ship-building terminology, which I shouldn’t do on this forum. :eek:ROTF In this case, when I mentioned stealer, I meant another piece of cardboard sandwiched onto the existing bulkhead in order to build out the bulkhead to the desired profile

I'm down to learn All terminology

IMG_20250523_184710955.jpg per the advice above I got to work making my sandwich piece. Here to get the shape right with the other two curves I taped a piece of paper up and then taped a long section of cardboard across the frames. I started at the bottom, folding the paper and taping it down the cutting it free before moving my brace up.

IMG_20250523_184718969.jpg
Once moved up I would take my pencil to the gape and kinda try to hold it in place and put stretched enough to mark the curve needed. I marked it on the inside of the bend in hopes I could push on the cross plank to make sure it was out stretched enough.

Continuing to cut as I worked up to build out the shape.

IMG_20250523_184824967.jpg
Template done, all that was left was to cut and glue.
For this side where the frame was still exposed I took a square up to the overlap.

IMG_20250524_073221432.jpg

Here it is taped in for a test fit and you can already see how much better it is than before.

IMG_20250524_073225594.jpg
Closer shot to see how off the og side was. I've been questioning if I got m2 and m4 mixed up lol

Not pictured
Cause removing hot glue from cardboard is not a skill I have, I took a cutout of the negative space and temp taped it to the other side. Will probably just build it out and hide it with more of the cardboard.

Pulled out the hot glue and got to placing the pop bottle boxes. If one was doing a cardboard boat for fun and wanted this to be the finished look, I'd recommend starting in the bottom back corner and working bottom up back to front so the overlaps are consistent. As I'm going to over up the seems it doesn't really matter for me :3

Excited to try paper mache for the first time in, gosh, what, 23 years? I've now got my "PhD" in YouTube paper mache so between that and what I remember I should be good to go. Right? This isn't going to go poorly and the next piece is a viking funeral right? Right? Lol I'm sure It'll go great or I'll recover it somehow lol
