this is how Pavel formed his kit. I don't see any issues whatsoever - in fact seems to be right on the mark IMO

A belated thank you to everyone sending birthday wishes. While I've been lurking here whenever I can, time has been at a premium. We're crazy busy at work and summertime always brings lots of yard work and repairs around the house, plus we had a new great-grandson arrive in June. I truly hope to get back to the shipyard at some point soon, sigh. Wishing you all well and thanks again!
 
Hello, I received the latest 1/25 scale version of the Oseberg kit. It's superb. However, I think there's a mistake in my shipment. The oars included seem to be 1/32 scale, while I received the 1/25 scale version. The enclosed plans show the oars as 21 cm long with a blade width of 4 mm. The ones in the box are 19.8 cm long with a blade width of 3.5 mm. I contacted Pavel but haven't received a reply. At the same time, given what's happening in Kyiv, I can't blame him.
Could you, if possible, tell me the dimensions of the oars at 1/25 scale ? Sincerely.

Hi Patrick.
I'm guessing you got the updated one piece oars with your model, not the two piece ones that came with the kit when it first came out.

I ordered a set of the new 1/25 Oseberg oars right after they were listed for sale, before the smaller kit was available....they came out after I bought my kit. The ones I received measure 19.8 cm long, and the blade width is 8/8.5 mm wide. The length sounds right but the width sure seems off from what I received.

Hi Steve, thanks so much for your reply. Yes, it's the new version of the oars included in the box. While the length of the oars I received seems to match the ones you received, the width of the blade is puzzling me. I'll contact Pavel again to get his opinion and see if it's a manufacturing defect. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Patrick,
Welcome to my build log!

The actual oars on Oseberg measured between 370 cm to 401.5 cm overall (the different oars that were found varied in length.) That puts the 1:25 scale oars at 14.8 cm to 16.06 cm in length overall. The blade maximum width was around 175 mm, making the scale blade around 7 mm.

I have not seen the new laser cut one-piece oars except in pictures. My kit was an early one with dowel shafts and separate walnut blades. I have planned from the beginning to fabricate my own blades because those that were provided look nothing like the original.

Hello Russf, congratulations on the construction log! I'm starting on the Viking longship project. I have a question, if possible, regarding sanding the ends. If I follow Pavel's tutorial, he indicates a 6 cm measurement, which places the line at the level of the second peg from the top. However, on the plan, the horizontal sanding line reaches above the first peg, and the sanding begins about 2 cm from the top of the stem. My question is: should I start sanding in a "whistle" motion from the 6 cm line or from the 2 cm line? I'm not sure if my question is clear, but I'm a beginner... Thank you.

Hi Patrick,

I am happy that you chose this model to build. I am afraid I have been a little slow to resume the model - life and household / yard chores have gotten in the way. I really hope to resume soon!

I go into detail on how I sanded the stems starting with this post. I decided to follow the video instructions for that step and so far it has worked out well.

Please consider starting your own build log (if you haven't already) and welcome to the forum!
