This is the Barbara, my first scratch-built model. Lots of mistakes, but I learned a lot. She was but one of thousands and thousands of packet ships that sailed the Atlantic in the 19th century. I modeled her because she delivered my great-great-grandparents from Galway to New York in May of 1848 after a crossing of 32 days. She was built in 1845 in Halifax for the dual purpose of transporting cargo (mostly to and from Cronstadt [Petersburg]) and Irish famine victims to New York, Philadelphia and New Orleans. She ended her days on the Pacific side of Panama transporting miners North to the gold rush in California.

That's amazing. It feels like I could walk around in there. Well done. The lighting is perfect. You need a smaller person than me to walk through it with a duster though. ;)

How did you feel, making something with such a direct family connection albeit many generations back?

I've been doing genealogy for over 40 years and, through a series of fortunate chances, have been able to find my family in a small village outside Limerick. I met my 5th cousin and his family a few years ago and together we have been working on putting our data on-line--see http://dayxday.org/. I have been researching the Barbara for about 3 years and have written a "history" of her which I hope to get published some time in the future.

How did it feel to model her? Although I am a rank amateur lacking skill and making many many mistakes, it was great putting together something that actually looked like the Barbara. The project got me interested in other immigrant ships and I am now working on a model of the SS Weser, a German passenger ship that delivered my wife's gr-g-g-grandmother to the United States from Ostfriesland in 1869.

P.S. Lots of dust, but those old ships, being used to transports everything from grain to bat guano when they weren't carrying passengers, were probably anything but tidy.

Off topic but had to say I envy you. We just spent time in Ireland in September, landing in Shannon just outside Limerick and got to spend three days at Adare Manor just south of Limerick before heading down the coast. Ireland has some of the nicest people we have ever met during our travels over the years.

Some of the nicest people and some of the most spectacular scenery. My very favorite expedition was out to the end of the ring of Kerry and then taking a hooker out to Skellig Michael. Come to think of it, a hooker would be a fun project....

County Limerick, Ireland. They have given permission for me to share it here.
Hi DM,

I truly admire the research you have done!

Having just vacationed in Ireland this year including several days in County Limerick, their desire to help you in any way they can does not surprise me. Based on the folks we met and got know a bit, the Irish are some the kindest people we have ever had the pleasure to meet.

I truly admire the research you have done!

Allan
