One of my small projects keeping me busy was assembly of small armament cannon

From the US Civil War era this simple cannon kit from AL went together with minor issues.

I ended up replacing spokes in wheels as kit provided were a bit short.

I drilled out holes in rim and inserted toothpicks which were same size.

I plan to buy thin brass strip and darken to look like tire band on wheel.

Only other problem is the kit supplied base.

Don’t know where or how this kit was stored before I purchased it earlier this year but the nice wood base is warped. End have opposite curves. So I will replace it also

A few photos of kit so far and the base

Thanks for the suggestion on wood type.

I had planned to make new base, just hadn't had time to go shopping at local wood store for a quality piece to use.

And side benefit, is I get to use more tools to route the edges. I have both bench mounted and small freehand (Ryobi) palm router.

I need to dig in garage to find my bench and my old Craftsman router to go with it.

I have a thing for small diorama's of weapons and battle stations as they are called for ship weapons.

I think I now have about a half dozen different type weapons from light to heavy cannons to build.

Some are kits and I have one scratch build where I was sent wood parts and instructions to do build from. Looks similar to project build done by Doc Blake and others on the SoS forum. https://shipsofscale.com/sosforums/...ttle-station-hms-mordaunt-1-32-docblake.2181/

Ok looking for opinions on base replacement

I found this nice size hard wood display piece with natural edge.

So I put Danish oil on one end (right end) middle is plain bare wood and other end I gave it some scenery to look like a field , as I also do model railroad and have the scenery materials handy.

So my questions are: in field of grass, stain wood darker color, use Danish oil surface and for field scenery do I keep edge to look like cannon is on a hill top?

Let me know what you all think. Examples below

Made display with canon in a field on a hill.

To add the display label that came with kit I carved a flat spot out in front and then glued a piece of thin strip wood I had on hand. I then painted it light brown and added label when dried.

Not to bad a display for non-ship artillery.
