Making progress on the Midwest Maine Peapod. First time trying to "weather" the oars and the lobster traps (I made 2 because I may do a diorama with the traps laid out to sea). I also tried to weather the inner hull but did not want to distract from the planking. Next step is to build a stand, put string handles on the oars, and add the rub rails and rowlock blocks. Painting the buoys then I should be done. This is my 4th wooden ship build and I'm loving it.

Allan - Here's a link to the boat stand I am using from Amazon.com. I've seen it available from many different distributors and at a lower price than $26. I find the cambered edges on the frame holding bars to be its best feature for boat model building. Funny...after this build I am going to upgrade to a stand with measurement markings to help be more accurate during construction. I hope you find it useful. /Ignatius

Your peapod looks great! I built one in the past and it was a lot of fun. Nice job on the lobster traps! The lobsters are a cute add on. To weather the lobster traps you may want to add a bit of gray streaks. When I did mine I went more with a gray and bare wood, the salt water really beats these things up.

Thanks Rob! Can I ask what paints and/or stains you used for your Maine Peapod? Im trying to stick with water-based stains for most of it, but I may need to use acrylic paints for the buoys. My spouse hates the smell of turpentine and my work space is in the attic above our bedroom.

I used Tamyia acrylics white for the exterior and tan for the interior. After some sanding I do use a couple of coats of sanding sealer (others use shellack) before I apply the paint. I find acrylic paints tend to raise the grain and it looks fuzzy. The sanding sealer does have a smell. The Peapod was airbrushed, but I have hand painted with good results. When I stain I use minwax stains which do not have a strong odor.
