Rescuing a lawn ornament.

So many snobs ,here .
If he wants to work on it
So be it ,
So it’s not a real ship .
Or perfect .
He is having fun with it ,that’s all that matters .
No one is dumping on him. He stated he was looking to gain experience in modeling. No one is saying he can't start with the lawn ornament. We are just offering options here. There are no snobs here.

I like other posters' ideas of gluing brass rings to the portholes, as well as the mesh from onion/fruit bags for nets. The first thing I thought of was to use rigging line on the railings. Use black for wire or brown/tan for rope.

I new here so please be gentle.. I'm 72 and retired and would like to try my hand at ship building. I'm want to get my feet wet by trying to rescue this what I call " lawn oranmant ".
I the features look way out of scale but I would like to try and re-do some of the obvious flaws. I thought I'd start with the deck railings . I also need ideas as to modify the round holes to make them look like gun ports. Any ideas will be welcome and I would also like to know if you think this is a waste of time. So I just trash it and start something else.

It has a great look, color, patina and charm all its own. It is what it is: folk art. If you can sort out all the original design and intent, do that. What it doesn't need is design improvement, only conservation and preservation.
Restoring it will give you valuable practice If you want to build a model of something afterward. Then you can choose a project of something within reach and perhaps a little challenging, yet still within your grasp and have fun with that. Don't start with the Constitution, Victory or the Sovereign of the Seas! :eek: There are plenty of great starters out there for a reasonable investment of time and money. Model Shipways is where I would (and did) begin my Odessey of more than 60 years of ship model building! I'm Still not the greatest or likely to be, but satisfied, happy and creatively fulfilled. Can't ask for better than that!Thumbsup
Happy modelling!
Pete

Has anyone asked WHY this particular lawn ornament NEEDS saving? Wouldn't a beginner project be more useful if were ANYTHING else? There are plenty of beginner level kits out there, and they will yield far better results, both as a finished object and as useful experience for the builder.
It NEEDS saving because it has value to the poster.

Years ago, a friend of mine was going to consign a "practice" chain saw carving of a bear cub to the bonfire. The carver indeed needed a lot more practice, but I took it home anyway, dunked it in a bath of polyurethane and set it out front of my mountain home. When asked about it I referred to it as my rescue bear. Might I suggest that you refer to your boat (Which looks kinda like a Junk,) as your rescue boat, or junk. But say it with pride, cuz it's yours.

I would call her Shènglì *, then you can say that you restored (improved!) another Victory..

* 勝利, Victory
