How does one polish the sandy appearance of the wood parts and make the surfaces smooth?

How did you cnc the 3D statues while you only have a 3 axis cnc machine?
Do you rotate the statue manually and carve it in multiple steps or do you have a 4th axis?

I attach a brush to the drill and use it to polish the wood.

I have a 4-axis CNC. But sometimes, when the figure is simple, I split it in half and cut the front and back into separate planes. Then I glue them together. The women in the stern are made of halves.
