Hi All, Still trying to figure out the SOS website. Is anyone out there building the Revell 1:96 scale Cutty Sark? I'm currently finishing a 1978 kit that I started in 1991, and am looking for someone to discuss it with. Here are some pics of my build as it currently stands. I'm starting the standing rigging, and just getting a little bored. Thanks, Jim

Looking good! It looks like you’ve made some modifications, specifically to the quarterdeck cabin and adding the entrance to the foredeck as per CS at Greenwich. There are quite a few build logs for this kit on the site. Go to “SOS Build Logs from Kits - Plastic”, then the “SOS Plastic Kit INDEX”. The rigging stopped me in my tracks for now, though mostly some issues I’ve had with my re-made masts and yards.

Rigging these models is not easy but it is very rewarding. The ship takes shape as you build it and really becomes a SHIP model when you start the rigging. You'll see that it looks better and better as the ropes are added and you learn more about the names of each one. To me, sails are the frosting on the cake but there is considerably more rigging goes on with them. Start at the bow and work out from the middle to the edges. Standing rigging first and then running rigging. Use black thread for the standing rigging,(covered with tar) and tan for the running rigging, (Not covered with tar) Please do not use white rope. It wasn't even thought of when these ships were being built. Follow the directions and take your time. What ever you do, DON"T let the ropes tie you up and get you frustrated. Take a break and go for a walk to cool off and then try some more. When the rigging is finished you should be able to pull on a rope at the bow and move a rope at the stern at the same time. It's one big cage of ropes and each rope depends on another for strength. No ropes should rub against any other rope. that creates wear on the ropes and they would soon break under real strain. All lines are snug but not really tight. Have fun.

I did my model from the static display in Greenwich mostly. I was going to do the clear glass stairway to the lower deck in front of the foremast, but the structures I made just didn't look right, so I went with the regular hatches. Here's some pics of the completed model, Jim

Thanks for all the kind words and good advice. I finished my CS in the Greenwich display rigging as much as possible. Here are some pics. Thanks again, Jim

What an impressive build; thanks for sharing.

The rigging... what did you use, where did you obtain the very fine chain, blocks and deadeyes?

That is one beautiful model ,Jim. Lots of work with all that rigging and good detailing on the deck. Interesting with the chains in the rigging. I hadn't seen that before. I think you should seriously get case for that and have it all covered to keep the dust off it. Well done !Norgale
