Rigging Line Accuracy

I have two questions concerning selecting the proper thread size for a line. There are a number of references to what the dimension of the actual ship used.

(1) Is there a way of measuring the "threat" purchased from a vendor? So far I simply assume whatever the vendor labels the product is accurate? This is not a great way since threads purchased from different vendors, labeled the same, are clearly different.
(2) How do you select a thread to use when the visual difference between two threads is almost impossible to detect?

If I understood the question correctly, I will answer this way: it is better to make the rigging yourself because any purchased threads will not be of decent quality, this is a fact. If you are interested in the life of a voropos, you can read here, but there is a lot of information there.
