Round Table class Minesweeping Trawler 1942/45 Scale 1:48 Built from the Calder Craft kit Sir Kay.

Hi Folks, a bit of an update. I haven't done a lot of new building this last week, instead I have been adding the already finished bits. This made possible after adding the capping rail. The piece I really wanted to fit permanently was the wheelhouse and bridge and its supports as this will let me get on with the rest of the top hamper. I also placed the already finished forecastle ladders along with the little pair that sits between the boiler room casing and the back of the bridge. Decided to paint all the ladders WA white, then a coat of clear satin followed with a slight bit of weathering After fitting the forecastle ladders I thought it wise to add the 12 pound gun plinth this to offer a little protection against me accidently knocking them off.( better than even chance!)

Sir Kay is starting to look like a wee ship now.

Some pics.

Back soon JJ..

Did you use the original guns from the kit, make your own or found other suppliers?
Hi S
A bit of both, the white metal 20mm Oerlikon was useless so I am using a 3D printed one from Micro Master NZ, but I will, most likely, keep the w/m kit 12 pounder. The kit ignored the bridge wing AA guns, I have some 3D 303 Vickers mgs. and will make shields and mounts for them. Hope this helps.

All the best JJ..

The missus, (she who must be obeyed), insists I take things easy so I have plenty of time to do a few little bits and pieces. Among them is this nice little frame work that supports the carley raft. The kit had some white metal parts but there was so much flash on them that I give up trying to clean them up, after an hour or so! I wont fix the raft yet as I still have some paddles etc. to make. Again the frame work needs a bit of weathering. The exact position of the frame with regards to the bulwark is hard to determine as there are very few photos of the port side of RT trawlers and the plans don't show it either.

Hope to be back later, cheers JJ..

A lot off fine new details, Jack.

World War Two, sailors 'gallows humour', "Join the Navy and see the world. Join a minesweeper and see the next!"
Apart perhaps, submarines, I cannot imagine a more dangerous section of war time navy than minesweeping. You must ,if you thought about it at all, have lived in constant fear that each new day could be your last. You spent your time trying to find newly laid mines, hoping that finding them didn't mean that they would blow you up, while the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe tried to stop you and waited until night time to lay some more. Hard men in tough little boats.
Well my little boat is coming on pretty well, I have completed the fitting of the rails around the stern and added the roller fairleads for the magnetic mine sweeping 'LL' cables. I have also made a good start on the flying bridge and search light tower that sits to the rear of it. I now have to add some detail before fixing permanently. I am waiting for some voice tubes, I tried making them, but mine where not up to scratch, so Mark from 'Marks Model Bits'https://marksmodelbits.com/shop, who made me some blocks and the large engine room ventilators, 3D printed me some very nice to scale ones, but they are just slightly too wide for the space I have left to fit them, so he is making some smaller ones. Should be here for the weekend.
Next up is the boat deck and on first look I don't think I will use the kit parts, but I will have a think about it and show some pics. next time.

Latest progress

Nice new details, Jack. Great pictures, great weathering …… what can I say more ……

Just a quick update, Mark, of Mark's Model Bits was as good as his word and got the resized voice tubes to me yesterday. That has let me finish,(almost still to make a pelorus) the flying bridge and fix it. I think they look well and add a bit of interest. It's been a target for me to get this far and I am well pleased to have reached it. The boat deck is next and in some of the pics. you can see the start. I have modified it a bit to more match the 1944 photographs rather than the simplified Caldercraft plans.
