Santìsima Trinidad 1:84 by Artesania Latina - Build log

I see that the more experienced forum members sign their posts with their real names and not their nicknames.
I don't want to appear rude, especially since Ismaele could actually be my real name... instead, it simply comes from the fact that Moby-Dick is by far my favorite book ever!
My real name is Enea, which is quite unusual even in Italian.

I've started assembling the second set of cannons, and at this point I've decided to move forward and complete the four sets of cannons and carronades.
My reasoning is this: the work itself is rather tedious, but it has to be done anyway, and I might as well take advantage of the improvement in skills that inevitably comes from repetitiveness. When the time comes to install the cannons on the decks, I'll have an advantage in having them already ready, and I'll be able to quickly focus on the other parts of the model.
I think it will take me a month or so and then I will show you a sample of each model.

Will you use after market blocks for the cannons in the highly visible areas, since the kit provided blocks seemed to be way out of scale and very unattractive?

First of all, thank you for your interesting observation.
Regarding the reported problem, I would make the following considerations:
1. The smallest blocks supplied in the kit are 3.8 mm, which, on a 1:84 scale, is equivalent to about 32 cm.
2. This measurement is certainly excessive and it would be desirable to reduce it to the equivalent of about 15-18 cm, and therefore to 2 mm pieces.
3. The feeling of disproportion is certainly accentuated by the close-up framing of the last photo, but there is no doubt that it is generally present and that it would be good to correct it for the cannons that will be in plain sight.
4. Blocks smaller than 2 mm are not available on the market (or at least, I haven't been able to find them...), so the choice is rather limited.
5. I must admit that I'm not inclined, except in very obvious cases, to modify and/or integrate the kit's equipment, but this is certainly a flaw of mine that I will try to correct.
6. In this specific case, I think I'll get the 2 mm blocks, but in any case I'll try to report the problem to Artesania Latina, the kit's manufacturer.

Finally, I must say that this exchange of opinions represents, in my opinion, the true essence of forums of this type, where enthusiasts of the same subject can exchange information and experiences to mutual benefit.
Thanks.

I received the 2mm blocks from Artesania in my HMS Anatomy ship which I am in the middle of.
They do scale better but they are very difficult to work with. I found that many of them were not drilled well and some not at all. I did find some 2.5 mm blocks from Ages of Sale on California and they look better and are easy to work with.
You may ask Artesania if they have 2.5 mm since you are closer to them than CA.

In their catalogue Artesania Latina have only 2mm and 3mm blocks. So do Amati, that's good firm in Italy, so I think I'll try with 2mm block and we'll see. Thank you for the suggestion and the photos

Hmmm. I started thinking and then measuring. The photos shows 3 sizes. The smallest one Artesania calls it 2mm but it is actually 1.5 x 2.75
The middle one I bought is 2 x 3.8 and the larger one is 2.2 x 5.5. What I thought was a 2mm was actually 1.5 mm thus why it was so tiny to work with. The 2.5 I bought is actually 2.2.
I’ll keep watching your progress

I photographed the two types of blocks supplied with the kit and recorded the measurements in mm, taken with a caliper. Afterwards, I asked Artesania Latina and Amati to specify which size the measurement on the packaging refers to. Let's see what they say.

I've completed the four sets of cannons and carronades, but I've put the installation of the corresponding blocks on hold while I wait to resolve the issue of their scale dimensions.

Since the weather has improved a lot here, I can go into the garden and now I'll proceed to sandpaper the hull and then drill the holes for the cannons.

I like those 3d blocks too, but they are far too expensive with the mailing costs to Italy!
If you cannot find good quality blocks in Europe to replace the ones supplied with the kit, maybe tumble the ones you have. There is information in the Tricks of the Trade thread here at SoS. This will not help the blocks with the holes in the wrong places but the rounding you can achieve will give them a nicer look.

Thank you Allan, but what I need is only the understanding of which measure is used to identify the various blocks by the manufacturers. For example, I think the Amati 2 mm blocks are right for me, but only if this measurement refers to the height of the block and I can't find this notion anywhere

Today I received a reply from Amati.
As you can see from the attachment, their block measurements refer to height. It's therefore clear that the blocks for the Santisima Trinidad's guns are unsuitable, as they measure almost 4 mm, which on a 1:84 scale would bring them to a real-life size of about 32 cm, definitely too large. I therefore decided to purchase the 2 mm Amati blocks. In the meantime, I will continue sanding the hull and opening the gun ports.

Good morning Enea……and I have been calling you Ismaele for sometime now. Well my favourite MotoGP rider is Enea Bastianini so I won’t forget that. Well, after Brad Binder as he is South African :D . Cheers Grant

Actually, I'm a fan of F1 and not Moto GP, but I know Bastianini because of the name, while unfortunately I don't know Binder... Cheers Enea
