Hi Janos. Yep. I didn't realise how big till I started the planking. . Still it will keep me busy for a while. Fun kit so far. Instructions lacking but no big deal.

Hi all it has been quite a while, but with job commitments moving me interstate for a few weeks, things got slowed down.
Anyway I have gone a lot further and competed all the upper planking. Before starting the lower single planking ( challenge), I have to cut another 64 gun ports.... and sand off the upper single layer planking ( hmm).
The only major issue so far has been the AL do not provide any measurements for upper planking final layering splits. I had to look at the photos and base it off cannon port count & bulkhead. Looking as the only other builds I can find on modelismoval.com forums ( Soanish ?) there is a lot of variations. Anyway we will see how it goes. Very early in the build so lots of chances to rectify nay issues.
2nd lower gun deck added & middle planking added as is visible through open deck at top.
Lower aft planking added
Upper hull planking commenced. ( I used 2 planks placed along keel to ask as guide as they are slightly less width than the actual keel and also added a pinning and alignment point for the planks at the bow.
The upper portion of the blaming above the WC needed some additional supports ( left over planking) as the hold for the bowsprit has no supporting pillars for the planking. These were removed once the hull planks had dried.
First 30 gun ports cut and planking completed to top of bulkheads
marking completed & read for final gun port marking & cutting.
The hull has not been sanded and finalized yet.

Thats a huge undertaking building a big model like that, and its going to take you some considerable time to complete, especially when you start on the rigging.

Just a quick up date. No much happened since last post.
All 94 Cannon ports now roughly cut
Filler blocks added to front
Shaping and cutting of 5x2 Sapele ( African Mahogony) planks. Very hard wood, little flex, so each plank needs shaping & hot iron / soaking bending.
AT 27 x 2 ( 2 lengths per side) and side plank fitted per day, its going to be a while.
The bow bending and shaping is not to difficult but the rear overbend is quite severe.
Long but satisfying task.
Gun port snot finishe to final size & shaping. They are just cut
filler is balsa that I got chea when masters closed down. ( $5 each for 40 x 100 x 1000 lenghts)
rear keel thining.
The bends are fun with hard wood
The centre strip is just a temp soft plank strip used to butt the hull planks against. IT will be removed and replaced with the keel once planking & shaping is complete. As this is a single layer hull the process is slow, to make sure planks fit horizontally

Hi dj58, welcome, brink a blanket. Its going to bre a slow one.
Quick up date Still planking !!!!. About half way there. The Mahogany is a hard ( hah) wood to bend and shape. I doing 2 planks a day.
Yeah first side done. So slow with the mahogany 4 months since I started planking. 25% left. Very happy with the result so far. NO filler. All shaped. and and exact no of planks.The last little bit just tapped in.

HI tks dj 56, its a slow process, and hard wood to deal with as it does snot lend well to bending. Being a single plank Job, its challenge, but enjoyable.

Very nice work on the planking. I'm watching your progress very closely as I'll be doing mine in about 3 or 5 months. It's a big model, very close to the size of my Royal Caroline.

Tks Greg, yep its huge. Alsmost as big as the CC Victory 1.3 vs 1.4m. Buggered if I know where I'll put them them when done . Still thats a long way off yet.
Oh yes. A 112 gun ship is a huge vessel, and accordingly a lot of planks have to be installed.
You have to grit your teeth.
It is a long way, but you are doing a great job with your planking, very smooth, very accurate.
We can see that you are planning and preparing every single plank, so the results looks very good.

Well the lower planking is complete and clean up commences. Whist not perfect, I am very happy with the planking. The single layer mahogany was a beast to deal with.

Using my chinese drill but se ( about $15 au on ebay)
For a bit of fun ( as it will not show, I decided to lock the keel in place by drilling and then treenailing ( toothpicking) to hold in place whist glue dries.
Those with keen eyes will notice that the rear super structure planking has been moved. I had a knee drop issue whilst fitting the hull planks and broke the rear upper planking. Stripped back broken planking ready to re apply. ( No huge issue but a PITA)
Will be back when hull lower hull complete.
