Although there is not a great deal of interest in this sort of thing these days, it may amuse you for a couple of minutes or so. It is a slide show displaying the complete build of the miniature steel barque Svaerdstad, on U-Tube, from block of wood to the completed model! The show may be paused by clicking on the image and restarted by clicking on it again.

Thanks Anja,
The viewing figures are well down, indicating lack of interest. Same all over I am afraid. I took the Pass of Brander to the local ship model club yesterday and it hardly attracted more than a causal glance! It looks like most modellers have gone back to Model Ship World which is a great pity, as I was hoping SOS would become more popular.

Well Bob,

Me to, I'm guilty of setting up my buildlog at MSW. That took some time, but now I'm back and SOS will get primary logging from me!

A very nice and detailed miniature, I have to say. I'm impressed, as I'm not good in the real miniature craftsmanship.

Carl,
I went from 8 feet to 1 inch to 32 feet to 1 inch literally overnight and found it much easier from the start. I don't have to worry about rivets, treenails, ringbolts, door handles etc, and as my rigging is wire glued o, there are no knots to fiddle with.
Once again, I make the obesrvation that most modellers talk themselves out of miniatures, deciding from the start that they couldn't build them.

Bob,

Righty o, I'll have a go at one. A simple ship ... What is a simple ship to build (rigged). Where do I get the details, form of the hull, setup of the mast, deck furnishing, rigging. How do I bring it back to 32':1" (Photoshop if I have plans?)

Carl,
I get the plans from books. For sailing ships, the books by David MacGregor are full of them:
Fast Sailing Ships, The Tea Clippers, The China Bird etc. these books can all be found on http://www.bookfinder.com

I don't suppose the scale matters all that much if you just want to get the feel of building miniatures. Just scan the plan and print it to whatever size you want to build the model. It will still be in proportion, even if not to any particular scale.

I guess this is as simple as it gets to make a start with. I found it online:

Very nice video production on your miniature. I was thinking about asking if that video could be embedded on the main Parent SOS page.
