SOLEIL ROYAL - HELLER 1/100 (side project)

Yes I always hand sew my sails, one of the things I learned to do as a kid because health problems, although I have operated some Machines in my working life I wouldn't know where to start with a sewing machine lol.. I much prefer the realistic hand sewn look to smooth Machine sewn look, just my preference of course.
Hehe. Nothing smooth-looking about my machine stitching ROTF

Bk on the SR sails today after 2 weeks off with other things going on.
Started rigging the Reefpoints on the the Foremast Main sail only 118 to do on this, these are time consuming due to technique of keeping the reefpoints flat against the sail, I would rather be doing ratlines than these lol..

I can only repeat what has been said previously! Amazing work on what I'll assume is a "dog" of a kit! your patience is astounding!
Thanks Winnie for your kind words.
I wouldn't say its a "dog of a kit" but would say that you do need a lot of patience and a bit research into decent rigging instructions and a translation from the French language lol..
This kit should have been finished a long time ago but for life getting in the way.

Life is strange that way! Always getting in the way of what we want to do. I'm glad you persevere!

To me You've got to persevere, there is no way I could leave a ship half built, that would just really annoy me so much in the long term. Same can be said of everyday things in life like decorating your home etc.. as long as your not doing that 24/7 like painting the Forth Road Bridge lol.. :) :)

Main deck now finished, Cannons rigged, deck detail added regards to Cannon balls/carriage, barrels/kegs spare wood for yards etc.. stairwell rigged and eyepins added to gratings. 6 running rigging lines attached as per instructions 2 of which get rigged to the Main sail as far as I can make out, will obviously have to double check the poor rigging plans just to be sure.
The Hull architectural sides are all permanently fixed.
Slowly coming together

Ho; I've just noticed yout log on the ship:) It's really nice work and it shows that with some talent, the ''out of the box'' version is a very attractive kit; your wood decks are particularly attractive for me:)))) I have started one too, but modified to all information I found; Well, most of them:) some can't be done with the kit itself....
I will be lloking for your finished work, as I'm sure it will make a stuning version of this Soleil Royal ship:)
So, have a great birthday ( I know I'm a little late:))

Thank you GuyM, for your kind words.
What modifications will you be doing to yours and what information have you found regards to the SR ?
Don't worry about the birthday I try not to remember and count them lol.. (:
Will you be doing a build log on here Regards to yours ?

All the best
Rob

Hi:) I have spent part time over 6 years trying to find as much about the ''absent'' informatin about the Soleil Royal; What started as a 10 to 20 pages little extract about the few points I had found, turned out into a 125 page document:)) Being French Canadian, and not having any plans to officially distribute the scribbling since it should have been just a few detail points at the start, it is written in French, so if you would like to have a look, I can send it to you:)
As for my model, I have not gone further than the photos below, partly because I sold my house and moved, and I seem to lack a bit of motivation these days; but I will continue it...
This is the only side I have made, and there are still small modifications to be made, unfortunately I found out about them after I had mostly finished the side...The top row of gun ports need to be square, so I will need to fill the top arch on them in order to have doors on the 4 first and the last 6 ports; then I wil need to repeat all of the work on the other side which only has the extra ports cut and the very top one added

It's been a long time since my last post on here due other good but necessary conflicting circumstances.
All the Soleil Royal sails have been hand sewn, now in the process of rigging them up, a bit of tight time schedule due to the the fact that the model show exhibition I've been asked to display at is in just under 3 weeks time, still confident enough this ship and other stuff will be ready for her maiden voyage.
Wishing Everyone all the best of health and happiness all your kind words to myself over a year ago have not been forgotten.
Happy modelling Everyone.

Beautiful work......The sails look amazing! I always wondered whether if all the sails were in place it would actually hide much of the work below; it would be a shame:) Maybe furl the bottom ones on the main and aft masts.......
Hi GuyM

I think it depends on each individuals point of view, I like a fully rigged/sail ship, depending on where you are viewing the ship from you can still see all the detail, to furl sails or not put them on at all also hides the detail on the sails which can be just as pleasurable as the rest of the rigging. Don't get me wrong I think there is certain types of sailing ship models that do suit just being rigged with no sails, something along the lines of frigates maybe a start point ??
I'm glad u like the photos, not the best i grant you taken at 5am this morning, next time I will be sure to take photos in daylight.

Well, they do show the quality of your work:) My comment was because I have looked at many photos, and a few real ones, and the first thing that hits the eye is the big white sail surface; it detracts from the work on the deck and the details of the hull; it also hides a lot of the ship on certain angles.....I have seen some combination of full retracted combined with partially drawn mixed in with fully extended sails which lets the viewer see all the details of the rigging, the work on the sails which extended as well as let some space to see the different decks in more details; that could be an option, though as you mention, there is a bit less focus on the sails work. I guess it's a matter of opinion:)

“Detracts” would not have been my choice of words. From what I see, I think those sails draw the eye to the model, and invite the viewer to study the whole thing in finer detail.

I try not to encourage people to look too closely at my work. It’s a long way from the quality on display here.

Yes:) I meant distract:) As I said, each has its own opinion on this.....And there are no bad or ordinary works; if someone puts its heart into building a model, even if it isn't perfect, that alone is worth appreciating:)
