Sovereign of the Seas - Sergal 1:78 (with hopefully many added details)

Grant,
Repetitive hours are not so stimulating, but results such as your work (and others here as well) result in superb looking models.

That said, I will for now, leave the starboard gun ports, the three channels, and deadeyes, etc. aside and focus on trying to improve my work from my previous work on the Vasa. That of the anchors. Just for a change of pace.

This time I will scratch build the four needed stocks using two pieces. With the Vasa’s I had made slight grooves in each single kit provided bit.
The rings are where I also hope to add more details. Images speak for themselves. Note image at #171 – but I believe that is way above my skill set….I’ll probably opt for a simpler variation.

I’ll use McKay’s image as my guide. How to add the metal bracings, that have angular right angles will be Hmmm, TBD?

Cheers,

Hi all,

Finally bought a much needed mini drill press that will accommodate larger (standard size) drill bits. It came with a small vice (not very good) ordered a
much better one that will arrive later today, which will also slot right into the base openings.

I was just looking on Amazon for the same thing. I too would be interested in its precision.

Daniel20, Jimsky,

Regarding the drill press; had to edit got the pricings wrong :(

Many of the same exact presses are sold all over eBay, on Amazon only under two under different “brands”.
I found that the only one (on Amazon) that also included the yellow drive belt cover was the BERXOL example. Not a general safety issue but a nice extra “touch”.

The BERXOL example also comes with a mini-vice. Very poor quality. That said these drill presses sell on eBay for the low $60s (no drive belt cover, or mini vice)
I upgraded the mini vice – the Berxol included example vice is “junk” The ArtyMaster Mini Vice (Amazon) is excellent!! Add $30.00

Drill press review. IMO excellent – obviously for mostly lighter work. Super satisfied with Drill’s quality, low noise, zero wobbling drill bit head, accepting all standard size drill bits, and the many available height adjustments, including adjustable drilling speeds.

So, you have two choices buy one without its belt cover , or the needed mini vice for around $67 - including tax (only on eBay) OR on Amazon add the much better ArtyMAster mini vice for an added $30.00 The combo would be around $110.00 out the door.

….And as we all know, with Amazon returns for up to 30 days are always free. On eBay might this be more problematic?

Oh, a note --- eBay also sells drive belts for these machines (Mitsuboshi belts) 60S3M180 is the needed size – I will get a spare belt…..None available at Amazon.

For such a low price this is IMO highly recommended - very glad that I found this press...and the excellent mini vice.

Regards,

This is awesome, John! Thank you for your feedback!

Hi mates,

Need some advice - I've looked through my "library" and also spent time at Google University. No real luck either way.

I need to go to Ropes of Scale to buy some anchor ropes. SO - should I get tared dark brown or tan???? also should I purchase Polyester or Cotton? hmmm??
Any advice would be great.....

Thanks

Kurt,

Thanks, I had looked at her as well. Used that image for how to cap one of the cannon barrels for the SotS..
I ordered both tan and dark brown cable ropes examples in several sizes from Ropes of Scale.
Tan does seem to be a good looking solution.

PS: Ropes of Scale have an super well designed website -Kudos to them !!

Thanks for your post and image.

Good evening John. I’m with Kurt re the anchor cables. IMHO I also feel the tan will look really good with your beautiful Sovereign - aesthetically speaking. Cheers Grant

Thanks Mates,

Yes Tan it will be - cable ropes are on their way. I was also not sure how to do the metal framings for the anchor stocks -
I will try to emulate - as best that I can - this perfect solution, using tarred ropes.
Close ups of his stunning Cumberland --- If you are not familiar check out his youtube video of this ship -

His work (Aleksey Baranov) is BEYOND brilliant.

Hi all,
Now finishing up the channels on the starboard side. Couple of “oops” along the way. Will be glad when it is all done – been taking too much time – well part-time with this built..

Added some texts to images – basic info., I know -but….Sleep

Next up the anchor stocks. Received the cable rope samples from Ropes of Scale - excellent products indeed. Of the ordered 1 meter ordered sizes – one of those will be just right in scale.

Paul,
As always - so kind - but you're being a bit "off season" Cautious this log is going on by - next Father's Day 2025, on 1/2 a decade + one more year coming up.
YIKES -
NO!! -- she will be done!! - hull project only - I so need to move back to an 8th century Viking ship to discover and learn about something that I have not yet explored.

PS: And, I've been advised of the following by my Admiral, As she recently said, "very nice sweetheart, but too bad that there is no place to display it".
Hmmm - I do "have a place in mind" let's see who wins - haha.... Onwards!!

And thanks to all of you who still tag along. or just take a look. Thankful as always.

Cheers,
