Sovereign of the Seas - Sergal 1:78 (with hopefully many added details)

I emailed Mantua/Sergal CS several times - never a reply! Finally contacted their shop in London.
They ordered the panel for me. It Took three months for them to receive it.

PS: I also included several images to then indicating exactly what I needed. They sent me this "junk"

After receiving this, I spoke with them, again, and was told that Mantua had to change all the wood panels because the previous wood was hard to
source and too expensive.

You would think that they could have FIRST mentioned that the panels won't match!! - they certainly had that kit available in their store.??
Their responce was I could use paint to match other wood.

OK done venting.

Rob - thanks for you very kind post

Daniel - As always thanks as well

Nigel – As you know you were the one – way back – that suggested that I look for a vintage SotSeas – again thanks

Kurt – Bashing is fun – you certainly are an expert when it comes to that

Grant – thanks – It is nice to re-open the yard – glad that you like the hinges

Uwe – as always so nice of you to “like” and comment..

Bill - I don't believe that there are any other kits of this ship available Sergal "owns" the market in that regard. Amati, years ago did produce an example - but
it's no longer available.

Regards,

Thanks for responding so quickly! Given that there are so many kits of the Sovereign, is there a kit you would recommend?

Bill

As John points out, I recommended a Vintage Sergal kit to him and I will do the same for you. If you must build from a kit. this is the best way to go IMHO.

I would love to go that route if one is available. I'll keep looking. But, I may have to go with DeAgostino.

Bill
Bill,
Oh yes, the DeAgostini – Forgot about that one.
Be VERY cautious the images (from DeAgostino, especially of the stern are NOT from the kit you would be purchasing.
There have been a lot of posts about this here regarding “false advertising” … Also, all gilded bits will need to be painted gold as they are either wood or plastic???

Other members please pitch in! I may be wrong about some details.....

AND just learned that it is no longer avilable

Check out my build log if you want to see what you have to do to make the DeAgostini kit more accurate. Personally, the Mantua decorations look more attractive from a display aspect and the Mantua kit can have the hull modified for accuracy as can the DeAgostini. Between the two, you still have a lot of mods to do, just in different areas of the model. NO kit has fully accurate decorations. Straight out of the box, the Mantua is the most attractive. The gold and black make that model's appearance exquisite.

Kurt,
I bow in ohmage – had forgotten that yours indeed (I have been following since the beginning) is initially sourced from the DeAgostini product.

Cheers Beer

Hi all,

NOT TO START an off topic thread. BUT, for those of us that are knuckle dragging mentally challenged neanderthals (I'm speaking of myself)
when it comes to 3D printers and what they are now allowing modelers to do - here is a great example. wow.

Kurt is at the leading edge, in our hobby, of using this technology along with now affordable home hardware.

And then there is the ZHL kit . . . Maybe I'll simply plank over the Airfix kit by treating it as a keel and bulkhead model.

Bill

I am aware of how small the Airfix kit is. However, given that the three POB models are so inaccurate and expensive, it seems reasonable to advance the Airfix model to be much more than it is. If I can do so by detailing it based on research, I might be able to build a more accurate model based on that research. We will see.

Perhaps the Airfix model can have measurements taken from it to produce a larger scratch built model? Just brainstorming here.

Oh, my!

Kurt,
Those will come out amazing.
I'm sure that you already know about something such as this - might be the best way to print your decorative bits.

Never seen that resin before. I haven't even opened the box on my resign printer yet... talk about being a noob!
If the resin has a sandy or grainy texture, I'll stick to either gold RubIt waxed based paint or perhaps imitation gold leaf. Lots of things to try.

Can you take some scraps from the new crappy wood, and experiment with stains until they approach the appearance of the old wood? Light Walnut Danish Oil comes to mind...

Hi all,

So laterally moving forward - needed to remove several bronze bits for attaching chainwales for mizzen mast. The bronze
bits will also need to be cut shorter, and need to make up some some support wood bits. And for some cannon port ropes also needed
to remove several bronze bits - do some sculpturing -perfect almost invisible re-fit
image notes FYIs

Thanks so much for your comments, supper or just dropping by for a look!
