Staghound...Extreme clipper 1850 by rwiederrich 1/96

Rob,
I hope this info helps. At 8' from the stern taffrail, Stag Hound was 24 & 1/2' wide. About amidship her greatest breadth of beam was 40'. Since distance between perpendiculars was 215' half of that would be 107'6". That means in 63'6" she would have only widened 3' from 44' aft at the fore of the poop deck to amidship. I arrived at 37' by adding a 13' central cabin, plus her captain's quarters of 12' wide × 18' deep. Knowing these facts, I chose to balance that out by having the first mate's cabin also be 12' wide. Those three cabin dimensions equal 37'. That location is 44' from the stern since her poop deck length is that. If those dimensions are off, then corrections need to be made. Do you think maybe the outer cabins cut into the 13' cental cabin?

The bronchitis sounds perfectly dreadful! Take all the time you need to get ALL the way well!
From what I'm reading your models will be the gold standard for the McKay New York to San Francisco fleet.
A lot more precise than my Thumbs-Upand ;) methods.
Pete

I then added bulkhead bracing. This will strengthen the hull very nicely.

I left off the first bow bulkhead and the most aft. To make sure length and the naval hood is properly placed. I will use the sheer of the plank sheer to set this.
I also traced the stem onto a piece of maple plank , so I can cut and make the cut water portion. It will blend into the 2.5 ft keel……I’ll add later

That seams to me to be a very solid base, Rob. I follow the build of this nice clipper with great interest.
Regards, Peter

Rob,
It's good to see you back in action again. I'm glad you're feeling better. Professional, clean, efficient work as usual for you. Having an arrow straight keel, perpendicular reinforced bulkheads are key to a solidly reliable ship's skeleton. By the way, it appears that your bulkhead reinforcements also follow the ship's outer profile. How did you determine that? Meanwhile, it all looks beautiful.

Thanks Rich. Still have a slight cough, but I have to get to work on Staghound.
I'll remove the hull from its aligning pegs....off the bench and begin to chamfer the bulkheads. Staghound, like Lightning, has a very sharp entry....so I'll have my work cut out for me thinning down the stem. I want all the planking to converge smoothly to just the end of the keel stem.....so when I add the cutwater, it will be joined smoothly and without any bumps or defects. I'm heavily relying on the half hull models image to guide me.

Rob,
What an incredible gift those half hull models are. Cornelius McKay has bequeathed us a legacy of his dad's ship from 174 years ago. Simply remarkable. I just hope my deck dimensions are accurate. I tried to base them on the Chappelle deck profile combined with the specifics of Duncan McLean's exacting cabin specifics. How's that looking compared to the bulkheads? Are we ok or is there an issue in that area?

Sorry for the laps in activity.
I began to lay planking by getting everything ready and a situation arose. My daughter is buying a new home....however that is upon the contingency of selling her own home first. that means she and her family will be staying with me for around a month. I had to use my work shop as a temp storage space to make room for her and her 6 kids stuff.
Needless to say, I have no access to my shop at this juncture. It is on the other side of the spare bedroom, she and her family are using. I've had to put my build on temp hold for the time being.

We have been quite busy around here making room and decluttering the house for her family. She has 6 kids...from age 10 on down to 2. So I have lots of stuff to put away and protect.

She's getting a much bigger house...if everything goes as planned. So hopefully in a month from now...I'll have some progress to post, when I put my world back together again.

Rob,
Family always comes first. Meanwhile, break out the cam corder. 6 kids ages 2 to 10, 4 adults, that's more than "8 is enough!" For a month you could have a budding sit-com.... ;-)

Today..I'm helping her move her heard of goats and about 20 chickens to my pens and coop.
I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

Rob
Rob,
Whatever you do, don't turn your back on those goats! I used to rent an upstairs apt from a landlady below in a 100 year old 2 story farmhouse. She kept chickens and a goat. One time I dropped my kees in front of this little sucker. As I bent down to retrieve the errant keys I found myself on my face in the dirt, staring upside down at that damn goat. I let my guard down and he head butted me good! That's the first and last time it happened.
Chicken wrangling can be lots of fun too..

What a great amount of information in these pictures. The paintings are beautiful and appear to be very accurate. I'm particularly intersted in the process by which the stanchions are turned. Maybe a picture of how you accomplish this, Rob. Also the drilling of the stanchion holes to set them in would be great too. I have a gazillion stanchions to turn when I get to that top deck. Really useful info from Rob and Rich. These two do know their stuff.

Me too Roger. Didn't know what the "naval hood " was until now. I'll have to look an see if it appears on the GR. It certainly looks really nice and very strong.
Norgale,
Since she was his only 4 decker ship, apparently Donald McKay determined navel hoods were unnecessary. To my knowledge, she was his only clipper ship that wasn't equipped with such devices.

....How silly of me...I didn't think about that. Well all you need are some shells that you can take apart. Not all will yield the same size shot.
I'm sorry, I embarrassed myself...with suggesting that you did. Well.....really what all I was referencing is the small metal balls found within shotgun shells.
If these are not available to you...then, I guess, you'll have to find a comparable substitute.

Sick
You don't need the gun although Biden says we all should buy one, all you need is one shot gun shell with bird shot in it.
