Starter kit?

Hi. If you haven't yet purchased this model there is one online seller currently selling this model for just £94.25. I discovered this bargain when having a look for this model myself (as I am also looking at getting back into boat building due to boredom as I've now retired).

You'll find it here Sherbourne Model
Hi Many thanks for this info, Have you dealt with them before?, I have tried looking for the website jlcallison but my search came up blank.
Google maps shows a row or houses no shop.
Cheers

Hey Daaveyboy, nice job!! I’m just finishing my Herreshoff 12 1/2, similar build. I’m just starting the sails and I’m admiring yours. How did you get the sail edges so neat- looks like they’re seemless. And are those grommets on the heads of the sails? Also, is that fabric or some other kind of paint on the edge of the sail (the edge that is blood red colored)?

Hi
The sail material is just a cotton sheet taped down on my cutting mat and soaked in diluted PVA glue, when it hardens you can cut it with scissors.
regarding the holes for the thread if you sandwich the sail between 2 pieces of wood you can drill it quite easily and the grommets are medium surfacer 500 grey carefully painted round the hole so it looks like a grommet.
I got a lot of help from "Hillbilly Modeling Model Shipways Norwegian Sailing Pram, Part 11,12,13," channel on YouTube.
The red paint is just modellers acrylic paint whatever colour you want.

Hope this is of help for you.

Wow Dave, thanks a million. I’m making the sails for my Herreshoff daysailer and I used fabric glue (Aleene’s) to hold down the hems and it dried rock hard, couldn’t get the sewing needle through it by hand, had to use a needle holder to puncture through it- never again. I was thinking about using dilute PVA glue to hold down the edges of the hems but was afraid it would discolor the fabric but I guess, like using it for knots, it’s ok. I have been sewing the hems without any glue and it’s fine but I intend to apply dilute PVA glue to the edges when I’m done sewing to prevent shredding. Thanks for your sharing how you did the “grommets”, really great idea. My other current build is the Bluenose schooner and I intend to mount full sails so your info is invaluable to me and I can’t thank you enough.

Regarding using PVA glue diluted for the sails it will not discolour the fabric. It dries clear and stiffens the fabric which makes it easier to work with cutting drilling etc.

For cloth or paper sails bookbinders neutral pH PVA may be a safe answer:

Lineco Neutral pH Liquid Adhesive, Acid-Free PVA Formula Preservation Material, Dries Quick and Clear, Water Soluble Flexible, 4 Ounces, Used for Book Binding and DIY Projects

Also for cotton or linen rigging.

The current switch to a synthetic polymer rigging thread is not compatible with PVA use. PVA requires a porous or micro irregular surface to bind.

White PVA "dries" clear.
Yellow PVA "dries" amber.
A brand of waterproof PVA "dries" brown -ish.

Most types of PVA are essentially a range of dilutions of acetic acid - vinegar. Wood does not react adversely.
