Following the 25' sail boat build that I posted about earlier, my next project was based on plans I found online by the naval architect Murray Petersen for a 30' schooner named Susan. This popular design has produced a number of boats. My model was built by the plank on bulkhead method in 1/30 scale to give a 12” hull, my preferred size these days. Elapsed time from start to finish was 3 months, which at my hobby time of about 12 hours/week amounts to 144 hours of effort.
Model photos are shown below.
Now for a bit of a story. Shortly after completing the model I visited Maine for a couple of days where I was staying at a marina on Georgetown Island. While out for a cruise in my son in law's boat, what should appear but Susan under full sail and looking absolutely beautiful on the water. Quite a thrill for me and a very unlikely occurrence.
